This morning the American Twitter account for the legendary manga anthology Shonen jump was very excited for some upcoming news. The problem was that they worded it in such a way that fans got very upset very quickly.
“Soon you’ll be able to show your Shonen Jump love in a whole new way,” the account tweeted. “Exciting announcement tomorrow!”
Which I’m sure was nice for them, they seemed excited. But this is January 2022, and whenever fans of an entertainment item read a line like “Show your Shonen Jump love in a whole new way,” their first and most feared instinct is to assume they’re about to be pushed into a line by crappy manga NFTs.
The fans reacted quickly. Here are some of the top answers on Shon jumps tweet, everyone criticizing the supposed decision:
Ooooh Lord, you better not get in nfts
If it’s NFTs, I’ll cancel my subscription.
Hope the “all new way” is just like that by buying a shirt or something because if it is crypto your subscriber count will be yamcha’d
Luffy wouldn’t stand for NFTs
If this is NFTs I will start reading One Piece but literally by pirating it
I’ll just hover my mouse over the unsubscribe button if it’s NFTs
Fear of the upcoming reality where we get Hunter X Hunter NFTs before getting a new chapter
All very drastic, and which obviously made someone at Viz realize they had made a horrible mistake, as the account then had to quickly issue a correction, tweeting “It’s not NFTs”.
phew! You can all take back those nasty tweets now. Who knows what the “all new way” actually is, the announcement is coming tomorrow and will likely result in some new merch or a collaboration. Anyway, as long as it’s not NFTs everyone can rest a little better tonight.
