Sonic the Hedgehog 3the third film in the live-action adaptations, recently announced a number of casting updates, from confirming Jim Carrey’s return as villain Dr. Robotnik up to Jessica Jones Star Krysten Ritter joins the cast. But bringing Shadow to the big screen means a few thingssound Fans are preparing to watch the death of a character – and it’s a child, no less. I’m talking about Maria Robotnik, a main character in Shadow’s backstory. Now this Paramount has announced that Alyla Browne, a blonde child actress, has joined the castFans are convinced that we will see her tragic story in a film series aimed primarily at families and their young children.
Maria is the cousin of the series’ villain, Dr. Robotnik. sound Fans will know Maria as a child who lived 50 years before the events of 2001 Sonic Adventure 2 in which newcomer Shadow leads the entire cast to nearly destroy the planet. She lived in a space station floating above Earth with her grandfather Gerald Robotnik and Shadow the Hedgehog, who was an experiment in the Doctor’s attempts to create an immortal ultimate life form. The idea was to transfer this knowledge to people, including Maria, who suffered from a terminal illness. However, when the international military got wind of what was going on, they raided the space station and killed everyone there, including Maria, with one survivor: Shadow.
A mortally wounded Maria is able to send Shadow off in an escape pod, saving his life but setting the hedgehog on a revenge-driven warpath. In the end he almost destroys the earth Sonic Adventure 2until he is reminded of Maria’s true desire to protect the good people of the planet.
Since Sonic the Hedgehog 3 appears to be an adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2 and features an actor who could play Maria, fans are convinced we’ll soon see a child get shot in a PG-rated movie. Longtime Shadow fans are excited because this is an important part of his story, but as soon as it was revealed that this would likely involve a child being murdered, the dark jokes started coming.
Maria’s death has been depicted several times sound Projects – it’s a pivotal moment in Shadow’s history in the comics and the Sonic X Anime that depicts the most harrowing version of the scene. However, there are differences between the Japanese original and the English dub, as the latter does not contain the actual shot.
Now that Maria’s death could potentially be shown to the widest possible audience, I’m really curious to see how it’s portrayed – as it seems unlikely that Paramount will show the military shooting a child. Both live action sound The films were pretty light-hearted, but some of that early-to-mid 2000s flavor creeps into Shadow’s stories. This film will either be a pretty drastic departure from what the film franchise has been so far, or the team will have to find ways to tone down these scenes so that the children are not traumatized.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hits theaters on December 20th. That’s still ten months away, but Sega has announced that a Sonic Generations Remaster called Sonic X Shadow Generations will be released in the fall and will add new levels with Shadow and possibly Maria.
