The third Sonic the Hedgehog film got a release date: Sonic, Tails and Knuckles will return to theaters in a film allegedly titled Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on December 20, 2024.
So the series is sticking to its biennial release schedule, even though this third installment is shifting from the spring launch pads of the previous two entries to a winter holiday slot.
This is a vote of confidence from Studio Paramount, who were delighted with the success sound 2. Released in April 2022, the sequel overtook its predecessor to become the highest-grossing video game film of all time. Paramount is certainly hoping that the third time the family vacation market will bring even greater rewards.
No details about the cast or creative team have been released. The previous two films were written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, directed by Jeff Fowler, and starred Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Sonic’s “parents”. All of them can be reasonably expected to return.

The producers of the film said IGN that they “wouldn’t even try” to recast Robotnik with another actor, and that “Jim Carrey is always a member of the sound
Carrey, who has previously taken lengthy hiatuses in his career, said he would consider returning for “some kind of script that’s written in gold ink and tells me it’s going to be really important for people to see.” It’s fair to assume he wasn’t talking about such sound 3 here, regardless of its eventual qualities. But after the resounding success of the first two films, Paramount will be ready to break the bank to convince him otherwise.
