Reuters reported that Sony is in talks to buy Kadokawa Corporation, the company that owns FromSoftware, Spike Chunsoft and many other Japanese companies. If successful, it would be a big step for Sony and would attract big names Elden Ring, Dark soulsAnd Danganronpaand be a counterattack against Microsoft’s recent major purchases.
Reuters reports that “two sources familiar with the matter” have informed them that Sony is in talks to buy Kadokawa, a company that reported $1.7 billion in revenue in 2024. The news channel adds: “Talks between the two sides are ongoing and, if successful, will be concluded.” A deal could be signed in the coming weeks, the sources said.”
Kadokawa is a Japanese media conglomerate that owns a variety of companies in manga, anime, tourism, video streaming and some of the biggest names in Japanese game development. This also includes Spike Chunsoft, the developer behind it Danganronpa, Mystery Dungeonand last Dragon Ball: Sparks! Zeroand Acquire, co-developer of Octopathic traveler and interestingly, the developers of the just released exclusive Nintendo game Mario & Luigi: Brotherhood
It would also be another territory grab in the anime space, with companies like Doga Kobo, ENGI, Glovision and many others on the side Anime News Networkand a large number of Japanese manga publishers. Since Sony already owns Crunchyroll and Funimation, there are obvious concerns about Sony’s dominance in this space.
