The endlessly silly debacle between Microsoft and Sony over the attempted purchase of Activision Blizzard King offers a new lowlight every day. Yesterday we had Microsoft states that it has rubbish exclusives compared to Sonyand today, Sony just noisy dissed EAs battlefield Franchise to prove how much better call of Duty leads.
It’s all part of an ongoing effort to demonstrate that one of the world’s largest console makers shouldn’t own one of the world’s largest game publishers, which, you know, sounds like a bad idea. But while Sony and Microsoft endlessly humiliate themselves and others to try and win a who-is-the-worst argument, nothing seems sacred. Hence the PlayStation owner’s amazing statement to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). EAs battlefield would be a poor substitute if it were to lose access call of Duty Franchise.
“call of Duty is not replicable,” said Sony’s filing with the CMA, as reported by The edge. “call of Duty is too entrenched for any rival, no matter how well equipped, to catch up to.” It explains that it has been the best-selling game “almost” every year for the past decade, it says that “other publishers don’t have the resources or expertise to match his success”. Well, that all sounds a bit fake considering at one point that Medal of Honor Series sold out call of Dutybut it is certainly true that in relation to a brand, cod beat everything else. But to bring that point home, Sony waits for an oncoming bus and then pushes hard:
To give a specific example, Electronic Arts — one of the largest third-party developers after Activision — has been trying to produce a competitor for many years call of Duty With battlefield Series. Despite the similarities between call of Duty and battlefield— and despite EA’s track record of developing other successful AAA franchises (such as FIFA, mass effect, Need speedand Star Wars: Battlefront)-the battlefield Franchise can’t keep up.
Sony complements that battlefield‘s latest entry—the comparable one fail from 2042—sold in comparison “only” 88.7 million copies codare 400 million.
Microsoft has repeatedly insisted call of Duty wouldn’t just become an Xbox exclusive yesterday explained how Activision’s behemoth would stay cross-platform while Elder Scrolls will notalthough based on the utter nonsense of that starfield is a precarious one new IP and, um, Fallout 76 is “niche”. So you can understand why Sony might not take them at their word.
At the same time do not sell cod at half your current player base would be incredibly stupid, and while some People might switch from PlayStation to Xbox to keep playing the annual shooter, they won’t 200 million.
Oh honestly, I don’t care. Stupid, childish nonsense makes many lawyers incredibly rich, unimaginable millions to be stuffed away while the company is Customers are wondering how to keep the heating going this winter. But I really hope as many of these ridiculous “woe to us” statements come back to bite both console makers in the ass.
