Sony is hosting a surprise tech show this week to update PS5 players on “innovations in gaming technology,” the company announced today. The PS5 Pro was not mentioned at all, but Rumors about the mid-gen updateIt certainly sounds like something Sony is trying to showcase the capabilities of their improved hardware.
“Join our streamed presentation hosted by Mark Cerny, lead architect of the PS5 console,” the company wrote on the PlayStation blog today. “The 9-minute technical presentation will focus on PS5 and innovations in gaming technology.” The event will be broadcast on September 10 starting at 11:00 a.m. ET on the PlayStation YouTube Channel
Cerny has led design efforts for Sony consoles for years and was the one who originally revealed the specs for the PS5 in 2020, along with a detailed presentation of the capabilities of the then-next-gen hardware and what it would mean for upcoming games, including better graphics, audio design, and much faster loading times.
A PS5 Pro is expected to offer improvements in many of these areas, particularly in upscaled resolutions and frame rates. Many hope the new console will more easily hit 60fps in technically demanding games, with performance modes sacrificing less visual fidelity in favor of a smoother look and feel. A big question, however, is what the new machine will cost. The existing PS5 still hasn’t been reduced in price after four years, fueling speculation that a PS5 Pro could cost $600 or more, even without a disc drive attached.
However, it’s possible that this week’s tech presentation won’t be about the new hardware at all. Fans are also waiting to hear more about the PS5’s backwards compatibility improvements, as well as new game streaming features beyond Remote Play. We’ll find out soon enough when the presentation airs tomorrow.
Update 9/9/2024 3:45 p.m. ET: A unlisted video on the PlayStation YouTube channel, the announcement of the presentation briefly included the title “PS5 Pro”. This has since been edited out, but leaves little doubt that tomorrow’s livestream will be a demo of the long-awaited update to the mid-gen console.
