The PlayStation 5 continues exceed Sony’s wildest expectations. The console maker announced another record year for hardware sales, including over 6 million in the most recent quarter alone. With Spiderman 2 Just around the corner, Sony plans to sell an unprecedented 25 million PS5s in 2023.
“In the most recent quarter, PS5 hardware sales reached 6.3 million units, a record high for PS consoles in the fourth quarter, and 19.1 million units for the full fiscal year FY22,” Sony said wrote in its latest earnings report
We all knew the PS5 worked So, but it’s already well on its way to surpassing the PS4 in many ways. Industry Analysis Group Circana announced earlier this month that PS5 sales had now surpassed where the PS4 was at this point in its life cycle. Sony now says it plans to sell 25 million more PS5s in the coming year, much more than the 20 million PS4s it sold in that console’s third year and “the highest ever for a PS console in history” .

This is especially important given the slow start the PS5 has had due to covid-induced supply chain issues, component shortages and major game delays. Contrary to previous proposals, Sony has made almost all major first-party games backward compatible with the PS4. The players decided to upgrade anyway.
Now that more and more games are becoming “next-gen” exclusives, this trend is likely to accelerate. Hogwarts legacy was cross-gen, but its PS4 version doesn’t come out until May 5th. Horizon forbidden westthe extension Burning Shoresis only PS5 and Spiderman 2 it will be once it arrives later this year (supposedly around September).
The dynamics of the PS5 also come with no news of updated or tweaked versions of the hardware resembling the PS4 Pro and Slim. Or announcements from new major franchises. But they could come soon. “We want to continue to create new intellectual property rights, introduce catalog titles for PC and strengthen the development of live game services,” Sony wrote, although it forecasts an overall decline in first-party game sales in 2023. The company had previously claimed this start over 10 new online multiplayer games until 2026.
