Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse did the impossible. And no, I don’t mean it’s a sequel, far surpassing the emotional highs of its predecessor (not for me). Across the spider verseyou will notice, is the only animated film to grace us with the outspoken brilliance of Spider-Punk, aka Hobie Brown. I’m talking about this guy:
In a film that features strange Spider variants such as the Spider-Mobile, Spider-Rex, a sentient Spider-Man Ice Bar, and Scarlet Spider While Spider-Punk graced the big screen, Spider-Punk’s cool energy stole every ensemble scene he starred in. It turns out I’m not the only one with this opinion. Since Across the spider verseSince Hobie Brown hit theaters on June 2nd, hordes of Hobie Brown fan art and fan cams have been circulating online. The thematic tenet of all these trinkets of worship is that spider-punk is just about the coolest dude there is.
Here are five reasons why Spider-Punk is the coolest Spider-Man ever Across the spider verse.

He’s the alt-punk that black representation animation needs
Pop culture has seen only two recent depictions of adorable black characters with a striking alt-punk design: Kat from horror writer Jordan Peele’s Netflix stop-motion animated film, Wendell & Wildand now spider verseThis is Hobie Brown. While these types of characters usually exude an aloof vibe, Hobie’s punk rock cool is such that he is secretive and aloof while being approachable and gentle with people he likes. To make matters even better, whenever he’s not the coolest Spider-Man, Hobie plays “shows, piss off fascists” and “enacts illicit political actions/artwork performances”. That’s what we call a quadruple threat.
He is voiced by Daniel Kaluuya
Half of what makes Hobie such a cool Spider-Man is Oscar-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya’s voice acting. Kaluuya, who happened to be born in London, Camden, England, “the birthplace of punk,, delivers a compelling performance in every role he plays. Since its breakthrough as Bing in black mirror Consequence Fifteen million earningsKaaluuya made haunting performances as the star of Jordan Peeles Exit And nope And won his first Oscar for his portrayal of Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah. Kaluuya let his soft London accent shine to the full while voicing Hobie, something he rarely does in his recent films, and was the icing on the cake of all his iconic scenes spider verse lines.
He’s the mentor Miles (and Gwen) deserve
Hobie’s cool demeanor coupled with his cheerleading for Miles is what makes his character so touching Across the spider verse. While the majority of the supporting characters in AtSV Hobie spent most of the film figuring out what’s best for Miles, taking on the role of a supportive mentor, quietly supporting Miles and Gwen in achieving his goals. For example, when Miles has his version of an existential Spider-Verse intervention, Hobie cheers for him as he resists being called a kid, even giving him “a piece of advice” to focus his venom powers on his palms. This allowed Miles to escape from Miguel O’Hara’s trap. Hobie grins as Miles pulls off his amazing escape. And when Gwen ponders whether to hide the fact that Miles is an anomaly in the Spider-Verse, unlike Spider-Woman and Peter B. Parker, Hobie tells her that she should.
I assume that Hobie’s guiding principle in helping Miles, apart from showing a bit of solidarity with black people, is based on his hatred of consistency, i.e. H. that Spider-Men are committed to “canon events.” I guess that’s what happens when your best friend becomes the tyrannical President of the United States in your universe. You must be angry with the machine, even if the machine in question is the very law that governs your multidimensional reality.
Its design is insanely cool and it took forever to create
Aside from being designed by Evan Monteiro, an illustrator who helped design Mel Medarda arcaneSpider-punk took up a big part of that spider verseThe development time for the animation is five years. In a recent interview with discussion about movieDirector Justin K. Thompson revealed it took “two or three years” to get everything right.
Thompson told discussion about movie Because the character represents the punk rock nature of rejecting norms, authority, and traditional ideas, he and his fellow directors wanted Punk’s animation style to also include breaking animation norms with a zine-like outline.
“We just thought, ‘What if that were the case?’ Strictly speaking What did the character look like?’ So we made all these crazy technical tools,” Thompson said. “You start with this traditional animation pass, and then the tools we’ve developed can adapt all the different parts of him to all these different custom looks that we’ve created, which are based on classic punk rock posters. And we can give all these body parts very different emotional hits wherever we want them to appear like sudden visual changes. I think this process probably took two or three years to develop and we only really came together at the end.”
According to director Joaquim Dos Santos, spider verse “Many Rules for an Animated Movie” broke by having Spider-Punk’s jacket animate at a different frame rate than the rest of his body with every movement.
“Don’t mind your mouth, mind your hands”
Since we live in the digital wild west age of the internet, there are all sorts of possibilities easter eggs And still moments out of spider verse circulating all over TikTok. While fans were quick to point out the subtle parallel scenes in between Into the spider verse And Across the spider verseJust as Miles followed Peter B. Parker’s advice to “watch your hands, not your mouth” while planning his escape at the end of the film, we actually see this patented bit of Spidey’s deception earlier in the film with Hobie and Miles.
It turns out that Hobie may have been the person who assembled the new Spider-Watch that Gwen would use to assemble a team of Spider-People to save Miles. Originally spotted by TikTok user @ccdeviltown2, Hobie can be seen crafting the parts for a new watch as he heads towards his battle against the entire Spider-Verse with Miles. What makes Hobie’s dramatic exit from the ensuing spider battle such a memorable moment is that he drops the new watch just before heading back into his dimensional portal. At the end of the film, Hobie also assists Gwen and her friends in rescuing Miles. Talk about playing 4D chess.
