Spy Kids creator Robert Rodriguez has cast his upcoming reboot of the spy family film series. The Netflix, Skydance and Spyglass sequel will introduce fans to a new family of spies. The new cast includes: Gina Rodriguez (Jane the maiden), Zachary Levi (Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok), Everly Carganilla and Connor Esterson.
The film’s plot details are still thin, but Rodriguez said when the film was announced that it would focus on a new “multicultural family” of spies. Rodriguez released the first Spy Kids movie in 2001, which came out in two sequels and then a semi-sequel and spin-off. The earlier films followed the Cortez family, played by Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara.
Rodriguez will return to write, direct and produce the sequel, with racer Max serving as co-writer on the film. Rodriguez’s career is diverse as he has directed R-rated action thrillers such as machete and Desperate as well as many kid-friendly action comedies, such as the Spy Kids franchise, The adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3D and Neflix We can be heroes.
