Wit Studio and CloverWorks’ wholesome yet action-packed new anime series Spy x family took the world by storm after it was launched last spring. Since its debut Spy x family became one of the highest rated shows on the anime database and social media site MyAnimeList, beating the most popular series like Demon Hunter, Jujutsu Kaisenand even the long-running pirate anime One piece. And that with a season under his belt. Because of this, I had to start looking for a Japanese voice actor Spy x family at Anime Expo and ask him why he thinks the show is such a hit.
Spy x family follows a prominent super spy named Loid who covertly infiltrates the school of a politician’s son to prevent the outbreak of war between two neighboring countries. To this end, Loid creates a make-believe family that, unbeknownst to him, has its own secrets. His adopted daughter Anya is a telepath, his wife Yor also acts as the world’s deadliest assassin and their family dog Bond can see into the future.
With the first season of Spy x family in the books and a second season and an original movie, Spy x Family: Code WhiteLater that year, while on the road, I caught up with Takuya Eguchi, Loid’s Japanese voice actor, at Anime Expo and asked him what it was like to portray portraits one of the best dads in anime.

Eguchi’s favorite Spy x family The scene wasn’t in the manga
Part of what matters Spy x Family Such a refreshing anime is its ability to balance lighthearted comedy about an odd family and serious drama about the threat of war. Though the series’ tonal whiplash is occasionally difficult for Eguchi to read, his previous experience voice-acting screaming action scenes helps him transform his performance as a soft-spoken father into a stern spy on dime.
Speaking of action scenes, Eguchi revealed that this is one of his favorite scenes Spy x family Fights from the anime never existed in the manga.
“I think my favorite scene is [in] Episode five, the episode where Anya runs a castle and Bondman, or Loid, has to save Princess Anya,” Eguchi said. “It’s also in the original manga, but many more scenes were added in the anime for fans to enjoy.”
For comparison: This scene takes place in two parts in the manga, while in the anime it takes about half of the runtime Spy x familyis the 24-minute episode. In the anime, there is even a showdown between Loid and the wine-drunk Yor. Eguchi says this is a favorite scene because it shows Yor and Loid as “cool” assassins and “extra cool” spies.

The best and worst parts of Loid Forger’s voiceover
Even though Eguchi understands well that Loid is a family man despite being undercover, Eguchi told me that the hardest part about portraying Loid is capturing his talkative super-spy persona.
“The hardest part is his inner monologue,” Eguchi said through a translator. “He talks a lot.”
Unlike the manga, which uses speech and thought bubbles to give readers a glimpse of the plans Loid has in mind to solve both national and global threats, Eguchi said he has limited time to express what Loid occupied. Fans of the series will find that Loid’s propensity for overthinking despite being a know-it-all spy leads to a comedy full of flaws with his nuclear wannabe family. For example, Loid once thought your bad mood had something to do with his failing husband, when in fact she tried (and failed) to hide it shot in the butt
Expect more original scenes in the future Spy x family episodes
Towards the end of our conversation, Eguchi teased that, similar to Spy x familyThe anime’s first and second seasons will also feature original scenes that expand on the source material, just as the anime put “a great deal of care” into expanding Anya’s castle trip from the manga.
“I haven’t actually started recording my lines yet, so I’m also looking forward to what I’ll see,” Eguchi said.
