It turns out we’re getting not one but two tactics games from Square Enix this year. triangle strategy was the first. During today’s Sony State of Play, the Japanese publisher revealed The DioField Chronicle will be the second and it gives me Major fire sign vibrations.

A reveal trailer, due out sometime in 2022 for PS4 and PS5, showcased warring kingdoms, tactical combat and plenty of very British voice acting, because nothing says Imperial intrigue quite like the Queen’s English. Also, it looks like there are subpoenas that will drown the battlefield in all sorts of neat nonsense.

Just look:

Remember him throughout squads of stationary high-fantasy characters battling against realistic 3D backdrops Fire Emblem: Three Housesthe “Real-Time Tactical Battle” system sounds more like something you would find in it 13 Guardians: Aegis RimWilly-nilly.

According to a post over on the PlayStation Blog, the game’s story focuses on a group of mercenaries known as the Blue Fox who navigate a war that is ravaging the continent between Imperial and Alliance forces. It sounds very familiar, and dare I say a bit generic, but tactical games are few and far between, so I want to believe.

Since 1997 Final Fantasy Tactics For PS1, fans have been waiting for a true sequel to the game. There’s been a lot of decent follow-ups and the Fire Emblemm The games have only gotten better since then, but nothing quite captured the original’s blend of political storytelling and imaginative class system.

The DioField Chronicle doesn’t look like it either, but I’m surprised. And since we won’t get a real new one fire sign this year, I look forward to filling the tactical hole in my game rotation later this year. Now if only it would come to the Nintendo Switch.
