Netflix series rarely get a second season, so Mercurial is the streamer with its big-budget Wagners. So it is a rare treat to learn that not only Squid GameThe second season is set to hit screens of all sizes during the holiday season, but a third (and final) season will be released in 2025.
The international mega hit Squid Game was originally released on Netflix in 2021. The Korean show proved so big that it became Netflix’s most popular series of all time and Bridgerton in a fancy feather hat, although there are subtitles and no internationally known actors are involved. So yes, of course, the streaming service would like more of itMany thanks, as well as the creator of the program, Hwang Dong-hyuk.
The nine episodes focus on a group of 456 people who take part in a deadly series of playground games for the amusement of super-rich spectators, while also giving us the backstory of the main character Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae, who has since become famous in English through Star Wars: The Acolyte). Although the ending was by no means clear, it did come to a very (un)satisfying conclusion (GET ON THE PLANE, MAN!) and perfectly concluded its parable about the destructive evils of capitalism. What remains is the nagging paradox of wanting more, but not really being sure that you want it.

In the three years since then, Netflix has irony-free Realistic version of the game show element, Squid Game: The Challengewhile MrBeast secured his position as the biggest YouTuber in the world with his own unofficial versionAnd, sigh, David Fincher makes for no comprehensible reason a US-based remake. God please let this get stuck in production hell.
At the end of 2021, Hwang also confirmed that despite initial reluctance He was in the early stages of a second season of Squid Gameand cleverly negotiated his agreement if Netflix would also allow him to produce other films in between. In June 2022, the green light for the second season was confirmed. And now we know that it will air on December 26, 2024.
The next season will likely focus more on the mysterious frontman and his brother, a police officer, while also exploring the background of the so-called “salesman character.” In 2022, we also learned that Lee Jung-jae will reprise his lead role alongside Lee Byung-hun, Gong Yoo and Wi Ha-joon, with the reinforcement of superstar Park Sung-hoon (The fame, Queen of Tears) among others. Two rather quiet years later, we finally have a teaser trailer!
The teaser shows participants running along a competition-sized track, watched by familiar Squid Game guards as players fall to the ground (and, if you know this show, are probably dead). Then, at the very end, it is revealed that there will be a third and final season in 2025.
I suspect, but I would assume that these would have to be done one after the other, given the enormously Lead time for premium shows like this for streaming networks. Since a two-year gap between seasons of the most popular shows is pretty normal now (The young is the last to announce this), it stands to reason that the expanded writing team (Hwang wrote all nine episodes of the first season alone, but said his lack of planning for the story’s continuation would require a team to do more) would have written both seasons in one go. Given the time frame, it would also be odd to stop filming between seasons.
So we just have to wait until Christmas to enjoy another round of gruesome capitalist horror. And then the next day, the second season of Squid Game is streamed.
