You knowledge around Squid Game. Even if you haven’t seen the series, you’ve heard about it – perhaps from friends who couldn’t stop talking about it, but also simply because it exists in the world. You couldn’t ignore it; it quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched series worldwide, reaching around 1.65 billion viewing hours in its first 28 days, according to data from the streamer. Zedd made a remix with the Squid Game Theme; Red Light Green Light got a boost, as did Ppogi; and Netflix even made a nonsensical (and ultimately boring) reality show based on the dystopian games of the original.
All I want to say is: Naturally it would be a Squid Game Season 2, And a season 3. Here’s everything we know about it, including the recently announced release date for season 2 (and a sneak peek at season 3).
[Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for the end of Squid Game season 1.]
When will Squid Game season 2 premiere on Netflix?
It is a Christmas miracle – or more precisely a Boxing Day miracle, which will premiere on December 26, 2024.
The news comes through a letter from Squid Game Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who also confirmed that the third and final season would arrive in 2025. Netflix confirmed that it had given the show the green light (ayy) for season 2 in June 2022, a slight delay from the big fall 2021 release. Squid Game Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had no plans for a second season and took a break after the first.
Will there be a third season of Squid Game?
Yes! In his letter announcing the release date of the second season, Hwang shared: few more details (emphasis on “few”) about season 2, in addition to the announcement of a new season in 2025: “Seong Gi-hun, who swore revenge at the end of season 1, returns and joins the fray again. Will he get his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce battle between their two worlds will continue until the series finale with season 3, which will be shown next year.”
Will Lee Jung-jae be back for Squid Game season 2?
Yes! Hwang confirmed in a letter last year that Lee’s Gi-hun will be back for Season 2 when Season 1 was about to end. The Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) will also make a sneaky return to Squid Game Season 2 along with Wi Ha-joon and Gong Yoo. (Hwang expressed regret for killing off many popular characters when he thought Squid Game Season 1 was supposed to be a one-time thing.)
Hwang also had this to say in the letter: “The man in the suit with the ddakji might come back. Also, you will meet Young-hee’s friend Cheol-su.” Other well-known names appearing in Season 2: Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Im Si-wan, Yang Dong-geun, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-wook, Won Ji-an, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-shim, Lee David and Roh Jae-won.
What is Squid Game Season 2 about?
So far, both Hwang and Netflix have kept most of the details under wraps. Aside from the new and old cast, there isn’t much information on how Gi-hun will come back into play (although the season 1 finale casts some doubt on that). But as far as we can tell from the images Netflix has released, Squid Game In Season 2, Gi-hun makes his wish come true: to bring down the games completely.
Will Squid Game season 2 have the same theme song?
The chances are pretty good, we would guess – Jung Jae-il (who is also parasite) really hit home, and it is quite indelible, even after several years without Squid Game. Get ready for this simple melody to haunt you again!
