The directors of Street Fighter Movie have been uncovered. Accordingly The Hollywood Reporterthe upcoming video game adaptation will be helmed by Michael and Danny Philippou, the duo behind one of this year’s best horror movies: Talk to me. While directors of a horror movie might not seem like the most obvious choice, these two could be the perfect pairing to make a Street Fighter movie great.
The two filmmakers, twin brothers from Australia, ran a successful YouTube channel called RackaRacka, where they uploaded short comedy and horror films. One of them, Michael, even has a bit of real fighting experience, having undercarded the Logan Paul pay-per-view event against KSI.
Most importantly, this is the upcoming film from the Philippou brothers Talk to me that’s the best argument for their Street Fighter movie. The film, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year and is slated to hit theaters July 28, is a kinetically twisted and exciting horror film that also features high-intensity, extraordinarily cool action. The entire film, which follows a group of teenagers as they use an embalmed hand that allows ghosts to briefly possess their bodies as a party drug, is also heavily stylized in a way that fits right in with the Street Fighter ethos.
There’s no word yet on when Street Fighter might be released, what the story will be, or what characters it might feature, but since the directing team appears to have been chosen, it’s only a matter of time before the Legendary Pictures studio has more on that announces the adjustment.
