Here at Polygon, we’re not one to make fun of the Super Bowl – some of our favorite colleagues love football! It’s just that there’s so much else to keep us interested in the biggest US television event of the year, and this year is no different.
With Usher manufacturing Jujutsu Kaisen References, Taylor Swift is coming off tour and the blockbuster summer movie season is just around the corner. Super Bowl LVIII appears poised to maintain the event’s undying relevance for at least another year.
Here’s what the folks at Polygon are putting our (metaphorical) money on:
- Taylor Swift in the stands and in front of the camera: If we had a bingo card, this would be it… blank space.
- Usher’s halftime show references anime: He has already shown his appreciation to anime fans.
- Same thing, but Video games: Since Super Bowl halftime shows rarely go to artists who don’t have a decade or two of reliable mass appeal, you have to something to attract the attention of the youth.
- Trailer for several sequels: Both Inside Out 2 (June 14) and Twister (July 19) are slated for full-length trailers ahead of their summer debut.
- Deadpool 3 gets a title and a trailer with at least one MCU character: I dare to dream about it Deadpool is bashing the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
- Taylor Swift as Dazzler in Deadpool 3 Trailer: Rumors about this mashup have been circulating for ages, and with Swift in the Super Bowl news, it seems like it’s just the thing Deadpool 3Marketing wants to benefit from this.
- Cringe Apple Vision Pro reference: Has Apples Explore the world of virtual reality worth $3,500 – Sorry, “Spatial Computing” – made enough of a splash to make it into the big game?
- M&Ms reference last year’s controversy: Last year’s M&M Super Bowl marketing stunt broke containment when it coincided with conservative punditry.
- Not a single crypto advertisement of any kind: The end of an era…
- Obligatory reference to the Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake halftime show: It’s been 20 years since the world was introduced to the phrase “wardrobe malfunction.”
What’s on your Super Bowl bingo card this year?
