New gameplay from the upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Survivor seems to reveal that unlike the first game, the sequel will finally have Jedi Cal Kestis slicing up on stormtroopers and other human enemies. And that’s a good thing, because this long-awaited change makes lightsabers feel powerful and deadly again.
The lightsaber is one of the coolest pieces of war of stars Tech and truly one of the best fictional weapons ever created. The gun and its sounds are instantly iconic and so ingrained in our minds that when they are adult actors they are war of stars Movies or shows are given a prop lightsaber made by them all the buzzing and hissing like they were eight years old again. And I don’t blame anyone for loving the lightsaber. It’s a powerful lightsaber that can sever limbs and cut through metal doors, and it comes in bright colors. What more do you want? But for a long time, most war of stars games – incl 2019 Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order– didn’t let you Really Slice and dice these legendary laser blades, treating them more like glowing bats.
However, in new gameplay released by IGN yesterday we saw that this does not seem to be the case survivor. In a nice video explaining how the game’s combat stances work, the developers show Cal fighting various enemies, explaining how his various moves work and how stances play a role in combat.
That’s all fine and good. But more interesting to me is what happens during the fight against some imperial scout troops around 4:14:
Look at this! Cal just cut off a guy’s leg. And if you look around the ground at this point in the video, you can see at least two other severed limbs, likely from earlier in the fight. This is exciting!
my city reached out to EA and Respawn about this dismemberment, and was told that “the footage is what it is,” and that the editor would have no further comment.
for many years already war of stars Games have made lightsabers feel pretty flimsy since it often takes dozens of hits to kill a random enemy, and you can never cut off limbs or deal real damage to your target unless it’s a droid or a random animal. In an interview in 2019, Respawn Senior Designer Justin Perez seemed to imply that Lucasfilm and Disney didn’t approve of lightsabers cutting off arms or legs. This was further supported by people who worked on season 7 of The clone warswhich is also mentioned in it IGN Interview from 2019.
So I assumed things would just work that way. Cal could kill any innocent animals and aliens he wanted, but he could not chop off limbs of stormtroopers. But it appears that Disney and Lucasfilm have either relaxed that rule or given Respawn a pass.
In any case, I’m looking forward to playing Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and cut off some legs when it launches on April 28, 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
