It was a great year for film. So great, in fact, that it was difficult to limit our year-end list to just the 50 best new films. Likewise, television had a banner year, and the 50 best new shows only scratch the surface of the year when it comes to episodic storytelling.
But not all of these films can be watched at home, and many of these shows are spread across a variety of streaming services. For now, Netflix remains the king of streaming services. Statistically speaking, you, dear reader, probably have a subscription. But the platform was released well over 100 new films in 2023 and even more shows. Not all of them can be winners. How do you get the most out of your subscription? By following these great tips.
Note: This list does not include films or television shows produced by other companies but licensed for distribution by Netflix, such as: b May December And Jawan.
Here are the best new Netflix original movies and TV series released this year.

Kill Boksoon
One of many standout offerings for 2023 from Netflix’s investment in Korean entertainment. Kill Boksoon follows an assassin who is also a single mother. It’s a great mix of action thriller and domestic drama, supported by a complex lead role from Jeon Do-yeon.
Extraction 2
Probably the best Netflix action film of the year. Extraction 2 The film improves on the first thanks to a change in setting and one of the most ambitious one-take sequences of the year.
The wonderful story of Henry Sugar
One of four experimental short films by Wes Anderson adapting stories by Roald Dahl. Henry Sugar is the first and best of all. Benedict Cumberbatch tries to learn how to cheat at cards, but the real joy is that Anderson continues to play with the inherent artistry of storytelling by having actors read directly to the camera and using stage-like props and sets.

Pluto
The long-awaited adaptation of Naoki Urasawa’s legendary manga more than lived up to expectations. It’s a beautifully told story about the hunt for a serial killer who targets the world’s most powerful robots. Fearless in his depictions of the personalities of humans and robots alike, Pluto is a masterpiece.
Blue-eyed samurai

beef
Steven Yeun and Ali Wong shine in this intense thriller about two normal people who, after a road rage incident, find themselves in a feud that spirals out of control. It’s a smart show about how the pressures of capitalism pit people against each other, anchored by two great leads.
The diplomat
A throwback to the kind of plot-heavy political thrillers that used to air on television. The diplomat is a delightful star vehicle for Keri Russell. It’s an absolute pleasure to see her directing a TV show again and the supporting cast, led by Rufus Sewell and Rory Kinnear, are more than up to the task of letting Russell shine.
