You’d expect a new Bethesda game to be the biggest RPG of the year, but no. Instead, it was like this Baldur’s Gate 3, which officially launched earlier this year to rave reviews. We’ve already written a lot about the game on the site, and you should too Check out these posts too.

What I wanted to talk about here is how incredible it was to create a turn-based, PC-focused, Dungeons Developed by an independent studio and released via early access, the game explodes like the latest call of Duty or GTA.

Everyone I knew played it. Everyone online has been sharing screenshots. Everyone was talking about all the people they were digitally fucking in the game.

It was wild to watch and a reminder that successful games don’t always require flashy, year-long marketing campaigns with big stars and Super Bowl ads. Are there any big video game surprises for 2023 that we missed? What unexpected developments have excited you all this year?
