Director: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
Pour: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen
The first days of summer, just as everything is getting hotter again, is the perfect time to shoot a very chilled horror movie, and that’s 2011 the thing is an excellent option. Yes, really, the prequel to John Carpenter’s masterpiece is actually pretty good.
The story of the Norwegian base that first fell victim to the Thing Monster’s mimicry and rampage is just as brutal, gory, and chilling as the original, though none here are as charming or interesting as the characters in the first film. The biggest tragedy of this version of The Thing is that the production originally featured practical effects reminiscent of Carpenter’s classics, but scrapped them in favor of CGI creations that aren’t nearly as pretty or scary. Even, the thingThe prequel is a great concept, well executed, and even a somewhat pale imitation of the original film is more enjoyable than most other horror movies you can stream.

Psycho
Year: 1960
Duration: 1h 49m
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Pour: Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles
Don’t let the black-and-white look or its status as a classic film fool you: Psycho is still an outstanding horror film today. The film follows Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a young woman determined to escape her life with a large sum of money she just earned. While that may be the real plot, most people will probably first recognize it for the presence of Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), one of cinema’s greatest and most disturbing villains and characters ever. Even beyond the infamous shower stabbing with its iconic score and framing: Psycho is full of scary and disturbing scenes that still make it an absolute must-read for horror fans.

Summer is finally here and that means it’s time to kick off your shoes and head outside to enjoy the wonders of nature. Or you could watch Down in the soil and resolve never to leave your home again…unless it’s on a nice paved area.
This film, a pandemic-era offering from kill list And The I 2 Director Ben Wheatley sends his characters into the woods in hopes of making a scientific discovery. The film’s beautiful and pristine wilderness feels at once like it’s just yards from a highway in America, and at the same time appallingly remote and isolated. Woodland horror is an all too rare genre these days, especially the kind that restores strength to the land itself, but Wheatley’s thoroughly modern folk-horror entry is extraordinarily chilling and surprisingly brutal — and all set in the great outdoors, making it a perfect The film kicks off the summer.

You are the next one
Year: 2011
Duration: 1h 35m
Director: Adam Wingard
Pour: Sharni Vinson, Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen
Probably the best comedy slasher since the original Scream, You are the next one is about an incredibly wealthy family who are attacked out of nowhere by a gang of assailants wielding crossbows, axes and wearing animal masks.
To say much more would mean giving up some of the film’s excellent revelations, but the team of director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett – who also directed – did The host and the surprisingly great Blair Witch third film – has plenty of surprises in store to keep every second of the film entertaining. The duo deliver a bloody mess of unique and brutal kills while remaining light, fun and scary thanks to a perfect understanding of the rhythms of the slasher genre and how to exploit them.
