Today at QuakeCon 2024, id Software announced a series of Downfall-related news, including a brand new way to play the first two classic shooters, mod tools for Foreverand more.
Id Software’s annual fan convention, QuakeConkicked off today in Texas. The four-day event brings people from all over the world to hang out, play games and see what’s new from id Software Quake And Downfall. To kick off the big event, id Software dropped a lot of Mancubus-sized news about Downfall.
Here is the biggest and best Downfall-related news from the first day of QuakeCon:
A new, improved way to play Downfall, Downfall 2, And now even more is available
Probably the biggest and coolest news of QuakeCon 2024 was the unveiling of a new “extended” port of Downfall And Downfall 2. This new port combines the two popular and classic shooters in a single package.
This new port, now available on Xbox, PlayStation, PC and Switch, is different from the previously released port from 2019This time Downfall runs on Nightdive’s fantastic Kex Engine, the same retro-oriented engine that also powered the youngest Dark forces New edition. This means the game now supports 120 FPS on Series X/S, PS5 and PC. This new port is also playable on Steam Deck.
Downfall + Downfall 2 also includes the “id Vault,” which contains concept art from both games, as well as early versions of monsters, weapons, items, props, and more.
Improved port includes new demons, weapons and crossplay
The new port also adds a brand new, official Downfall Consequence: Heritage of the Rust. This new campaign with 16 maps, divided into two acts of 8 maps each, was developed by Nightdive Studios, id Software and MachineGames.
Legacy of Rust will also include some new monsters and weapons. Id Software says this is the first time since Downfall 2The original release said the company had officially added new monsters and weapons to the classic FPS.
Oh, and this new port also supports full crossplay, so you can play either via the classic Downfall Play together across platforms or let your friends kill you, even if they’re on Xbox and you’re on PC.
Downfall + Downfall 2 Enhanced Port is free for previous owners
Here is the best news: If you have already played the previously released Bethesda ports of Downfall or Downfall 2, You get this new version of the two classic games for free. Even if you only own Downfall or Downfall 2 on PS5 it doesn’t matter, you also get access to this new enhanced port.
Id Software says the free updated version of Downfall And Downfall 2 should happen automatically on consoles and PC. In fact, your copy of Downfall may already be updated.
And yes, Doom and Doom 2The new port is free for Game Pass members on PC and Xbox.
The old ports of Downfall and Downfall 2 Will not disappear
However, if you don’t like any of the changes in the new port, or you just hate change, Bethesda and id Software have confirmed that the previous ports aren’t going away.
On consoles, you’ll still have access to these older versions and will be able to download and play them for free even after today’s big update. They’ll be treated as separate games in your console library. On the PC, users have to fiddle around a bit more to gain access to the older ports, but they will still be there.
I appreciate that id Software isn’t removing the old ports and replacing them exclusively with the new ones. It’s a small thing, but nice and something I’d like to see more of from all developers and publishers in the future.
Nintendo DOWNFALL Receive a new, improved physical version
It is not the best version of the original DownfallThe SNES port from 1995 is still well remembered by many and is considered a technical marvel. It is impressive that this game was even ported to such an underpowered console. And now that the SNES port of Downfall is being completely and lavishly reissued.
Limited Run Games and id Software announced at QuakeCon that there will be a new physical port of Downfall on the SNES comes in 2025. This version will include circle strafing, “Thy Flesh Consumed”, performance improvements, level codes, and monster respawning on Nightmare difficulty. Fun stuff!
ID Software adds official mod support to Eternal fate
It was not only classic Downfall received some attention during QuakeCon, as id Software also confirmed that Eternal fate receives official mod support.
“We are so impressed by the DOOM Eternal Community mods created without official tools. They inspired us to release a public beta of idStudio for developers and an optional PC mod preview that allows players to easily browse and play mods. We can’t wait to see what this community does next,” said id Software on its official website.
Mod tools and mods are only available to PC players and are currently still in a beta-like preview. But I am excited to see what players can do with real mod tools in Eternal fate.
Doom Anthology Collects all games, includes a BFG replica
Finally, id Software announced a massive Downfall Package that includes all the games plus a BFG replica. The gun replica is not full size but looks pretty cool. The Doom Anthology has no release date yet and will cost $80.
