In more unsurprising sequel news from this week’s film industry conference, CinemaCon, Warner Bros. has confirmed it will be making a sequel The Batman. Star Robert Pattinson and director Matt Reeves will both return for the sequel to 2021’s biggest film to date. No release date was given.
Reeves confirmed that he would both write and direct The Batman2and said, “I look forward to returning to this world for the next chapter.”
As noted by diversity and meeting, The Batman marked Warner Bros.’ to return films exclusively to cinemas after more than a year of simultaneous releases on its streaming service HBO Max. The film grossed around $760 million in the global box office in a relatively short 45-day theatrical window before its HBO Max debut last week drew a larger home audience than any of last year’s day-and-date films (including Dune, Wonder Woman 1984and The Matrix Resurrections) – proving that, at least when it comes to franchise entertainment, you can have your cake and eat it.
Fans should be excited for Pattinson to return to the role. His moody and vulnerable approach to the character was widely praised by Polygon The Batman Critics call him “a great Batman, dour and serious but not impenetrable”. No plot details for the new film have been announced, although it’s more than likely the character will make at least one appearance after Barry Keoghan’s monstrous Joker was revealed in a deleted scene released a few weeks after the film opened .
