Sure, well, yes, in retrospect everything is obvious, but it still seems to have taken far too long to admit that the chair in front of my (standing) desk is almost certainly the most important piece of furniture in my house.

Instead, I thought this to myself: I should buy something cheap. I mean, this isn’t a couch. This is not for my family room. I am not buying a bed. Relax up there, Mr. Rockefeller.

And so began years of bruising on the elbow, back changes and uneven wearing of leather on poorly fitted, cheap office chairs. If my goal was to waste money and get a little angry for a decade, then I have been wonderfully successful.

Then one day I thought, and I could never talk myself out of it: my office chair is literally where I spend most of my day. Why on earth wouldn’t I consider it very important?

It took me a few more years to persuade myself to do something I wish I had sooner.
