The latest season of Dimensions 20, Never stop explodingwas one of the most entertaining episodes of Dropout’s flagship game series. And a big part of that was the inspiration the series received from action movies, with direct influences from Die Hard, spythe Fast and the Furious franchise, James Bond films and more. It all came together in an irresistible package of silly, fun moments, with an all-star cast and a GM who embodied “freedom and joy” this season.
Maybe you, like me, miss the new Wednesday editions of Never stop exploding and are in the mood for it. Or maybe the series gave you a taste of over-the-top, ridiculous action movies and you just want more. We’ve got you covered – Polygon spoke to the cast of the series and asked them about their favorite action movies. We’ve collected them all here, along with a few suggestions of our own below that feel like a good fit with Never stop exploding
Rekha Shankar: Rush Hour and Jackie Chan’s filmography
Where to watch: For digital rental or purchase on Amazon and Apple TV
“I liked it very much Rush hour when I saw it. It’s a lot of fun and I love martial arts. Jackie Chan is the best, we should all love Jackie Chan. Watch “Every Frame a Painting” by Jackie Chan. So good.”
Where to watch: For digital rental or purchase on Amazon and Apple TV
“Simple premise, incredible choreography, huge sets, murderous deaths, some of the most creative deaths I’ve ever seen in a movie. And it’s a simple story. You have to get to the top of the building.”
Ify Nwadiwe: The Fast and Furious films
Where to watch: Most are available on Peacock, with the exception of Fast X (on Prime Video) and Hobbs & Shaw (available to rent or buy digitally from Amazon and Apple TV).
“It’s a series of films that pose problems that could normally be solved with anything else, but in this situation, for some reason, can be solved with cars. If you know how to drive a car, you become a superhero in this world.”
Isabella Roland and Brennan Lee Mulligan: Die Hard
Where to watch: Hulu or for digital rental or purchase on Amazon and Apple TV
Isabella: “Die Hard. I love it. I love John. I love Hans. I love what’s-his-name. I love every supporting character. It’s perfect.”
Brennan: “The script is perfect. I love Christmas. The dialogue, the pacing. Poor Alan Rickman, he was lost too soon, one of the greatest villains of all time. I love the whole idea of change, the motivation of the villains, they’re just thieves. They just want to get rich. And find me one line that will make you jump out of your skin with excitement other than “Yippee Ki-Yay, asshole.”
Alex Song-Xia: Crazy, stupid love
Where to watch: For digital rental or purchase on Amazon and Apple TV
“My favorite action movie is Crazy, stupid love. [Isabella interrupts to say: “I hate you.”] The part where Steve Carell jumps out of the car? That’s action. And there’s a big fight scene at the end. It’s my favorite movie ever, and I’m sorry if that’s an excuse.”
A few quick recommendations from me, which were made in conversation with Never stop exploding
Where to watch: Free with ads on Tubi or available to rent or buy digitally on Amazon and Apple TV
Never stop exploding reminded me most of The last action heroa wonderful meta-action comedy by Die Hard Director John McTiernan’s story is about an action-movie-loving teenager who is magically transported into one. Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in the fictional film, while Charles Dance plays the delightfully over-the-top villain.
Where to watch: Max and Criterion Channel or for digital rental or purchase on Amazon and Apple TV
The ridiculous jokes of Never stop exploding reminded me of The heroic trioa wonderfully absurd Hong Kong superhero film directed by the great Johnnie To and starring Michelle Yeoh, Maggie Cheung and Antia Mui as a crime-fighting trio.
Where to watch: Netflix or for digital rental or purchase on Apple TV
I would be remiss if I didn’t recommend it Jawanthe highest-grossing Indian film of 2023 and a return to form for star Shah Rukh Khan. It has everything: slick action sequences? Yes. Passionate romance? Yes. Gripping revenge story? Yes. Groovy dance performances? Check. An inspiring “all power to the people” message? Check, check, check.
