Let’s see what this month has to offer!

Editor’s recommendation: Godzilla Minus One

In Godzilla Minus One, Godzilla destroys a city.

Director: Takashi Yamazaki

When I first saw Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi’s Shin-Godzilla – The Wonderful World of Madness In 2016, I never thought I would see another Godzilla movie – let alone any Kaiju movie, Period — that would meet the high standard it has set. Takashi Yamazaki has proved me wrong. Not only is Godzilla Minus One An inspired reinvention of Toho’s nuclear, fire-breathing destruction figure, this is a film that easily rivals Anno and Higuchi’s aforementioned masterpiece.

Set in 1945 during the final weeks of World War II, the film tells the story of Kōichi Shikishima, a kamikaze pilot who abandons his duty because he knows his sacrifice would not change the outcome of the war. After surviving a chance encounter with Godzilla, Kōichi returns to Tokyo to rebuild his life while struggling with his PTSD and survivor’s guilt. When Godzilla resurfaces several years later, Kōichi must rise up alongside an army of volunteers to save their city and put an end to the creature once and for all. If, like me, you were disappointed with how long it took for Godzilla to appear in Gareth Edwards’ 2014 film, you can now put your fears to rest; it doesn’t take much longer than 10 minutes for Godzilla to appear Godzilla Minus One comes to show how the King of the Monsters screws everything up in the most spectacular and horrific way imaginable.

But beyond that, the film is also a deeply moving human drama about one man’s search for a better conscience and a nation’s attempt to overcome a terrible obstacle in the hope of a better future. It is a moving, brilliant and worth seeing tribute to one of cinema’s most famous figures. –Toussaint Egan

The Matrix Resurrection

Director: Lana Wachowski
Pour: Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

Like many other fans of the Matrix trilogy, I was hesitant when I first heard that Lana Wachowski would be returning to the series to direct a new film nearly two decades later. Even when it was announced that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss would be returning in their roles, I was still cautious. All of those doubts were dispelled the moment the score kicked in and the green digital rain of the Matrix poured across the screen, drawing me back into a universe I loved but saw from a different perspective.

The Matrix Resurrection is not The Matrix. It is not a repetition of the hero’s journey or of Neo’s heroic self-sacrifice to create peace between man and machine in the face of a shared existential threat. It is, quite simply, a love story. A love story that turns into a distorted reflection of the opening moments of the original film, an explosive rescue mission and Then into a post-human heist movie, all in the service of reuniting two lost lovers who – despite everything they fought for – never got their happy ending. Don’t watch The Matrix Resurrection expected that it The Matrix But more. Instead, consider it the epilogue to one of the best sci-fi action series of all time, and a film from a director who will never be satisfied with repeating herself. -THE

Bad Miyan Chote Miyan

Tiger Shroff flexes his biceps as it rests on Akshay Kumar's shoulder in front of a helicopter in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. Kumar folds his arms.

Director: Ali Abbas Zafar

First, a few reservations: 2024 Bad Miyan Chote Miyan is not exactly a Good film. The script is inconsistent and often confusing (including a bizarre in-character advertisement for the Indian mobile game FAU-G by brand ambassador Akshay Kumar); it’s sci-fi in the vein of Marvel movies (well, just about); and it’s very chauvinistic in the vein of blockbuster action movies. But it’s a fun, silly, big-budget time. It’s just hard not to have a good time when you’re watching a Bollywood version of a Bad Boys-type film with Tiger Shroff and Akshay Kumar. This may be because I consider Tiger Shroff to be one of the most watchable film stars in the world. In general, your opinion may differ.

Bad Miyan Chote Miyanwhich means something like “Big Lord, Little Lord”, has the same name as a 1994 Bollywood film that was directly inspired by Bad Boys. This film appears in this one, but apart from that and the common affinity to Bad Boysthe two have little else in common. While that film is about two petty thieves who look exactly like two policemen getting up to mischief, this version is about two super soldiers sent to save India from a catastrophic attack by a masked villain who wants to destroy the country… with science!

One of the most expensive blockbusters in Bollywood history, Bad Miyan Chote Miyan was a historic flop at the Indian box office this year and was widely panned by critics. But if, like me, you are interested in the state of global blockbusters and the idea of a Tiger Shroff-led Bad BoysIf you like this kind of film, you should watch it. But don’t expect too much. —Pete Volk
