With John Wick: Chapter 4 This week’s broad cultural conversation dominating the box office has largely turned to a single question: “Is John Wick dead?” The film purposely doesn’t answer that question, as writers Michael Finch and Shay Hatten say Polygon viewers interpret should John Wick 4‘s final as they want.
Release studio Lionsgate has already given John Wick: Chapter 5 green light for the production and Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group recently towards deadline The studio is “not ready to say goodbye to Keanu with this franchise.” Given its success, there probably will be John Wick 5but series director Chad Stahelski tells Polygon he’s not ready to commit to that as his next project — and that he actually hasn’t confirmed what his next project will be.
Stahelski currently has a whopping 11 different projects listed as “in development” or “in pre-production” on IMDb.com. classified
But what is Stahelski most actively working on right now? None of that, he tells Polygon – he’s still coming down John Wick 4 and wait and see which of his planned projects actually comes about.
“Hollywood has this magic algorithm — cast availability, my availability, crew availability,” he says. “Is the script ready? Is the budget fixed? Do we have locations? There’s all these things that go in [moving a project into production]. That’s why you read this so often, about directors [having several movies in progress]. It’s not like we have five choices that are all ready. A lot of things have to come into play for a film to be made – you’d be surprised how much.”
However, he does have some preferences in terms of what he wants to move up the priority list. “I can tell you things [on my docket] I love the most,” he says. “I am very proud to be associated with Michael B. Jordan Rainbow Six. I couldn’t be happier Spirit of Tsushima, which is by far one of my favorite items on the list – a chance to do a Ridley Scott Gladiator take on a samurai film with the aesthetic and look I love doing. Building that world would be pretty awesome.
“Of course we’re still attached to the Highlander world. And with Netflix we have Black Samurai, this is an amazing sci-fi series that we are trying to get off the ground. And they are at the top of my list.”
Stahelski says part of the reason he hasn’t started work on his next film or show is that he prefers to stick to one project at a time. “I’m staying very, very focused, to be honest,” he says. “I wish I was more of a multitasker. I’m not like other directors who have like 10 things going on. I tried to get John Wick: Chapter 4 out the door, do the best we can, and then just empty the psychological and intellectual palette. And then we get in.”
That is, with John Wick 4 in the theaters he expects to start one of these projects soon. “My team was working on all of these things at the same time. Now with wick out of the way, I can focus and I’ll see which ones I can get going. I mean I love to work. I would like to shoot this year. So that will be what I can get out on the track first.”
