The World Series of Poker may have its coveted bracelet, but the Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game now has its own hardware for its most powerful players. Of course, it’s a gold Mickey Mouse.
The very first Regional tournaments of the Lorcana Challenge were held over Memorial Day weekend, with two-day events taking place in both Lille, France, and Atlanta, Georgia. The game’s publisher, Ravensburger, confirmed to Polygon on Wednesday that the Lille tournament ended just hours before the tournament was due to take place. This means that Frank Karsten, Magic the Gathering Pro Tour player and member of the Magic the Gathering Hall of Fame, is the world’s first Lorcana Challenge champion.
Karsten won an exciting final against more than 2,000 participants. The final was broadcast on YouTube by Mushu ReportHis deck, a variant of the Steelsong Aggro Strategyfocuses on powerful songs sung by powerful characters from the Disney universe, including Ariel, the spectacular singer; Rapunzel, who is gifted with healing powers; The Queen, the commanding presence; and Robin Hood, Champion of Sherwood.
But enough about the old cards. What about the new ones that Karsten took home? The Lorcana Challenge winner’s prize package includes a binder with a foil version of every tournament-legal card currently in print – including the coveted and rare Enchanted cards in the series. It also includes a gold foil version of Mickey Mouse, Brave Little Tailor, with alternate art. Only 500 of these cards were produced, and each has its own unique serial number.
To celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary this year Karsten received card number 100.
The next Lorcana Challenge tournament will take place on June 8th and 9th in Chicago, USA. Tickets for the event are still availablewhile opportunities to participate in the tournament currently seem to be limited to waiting list applications.
