Florida voters made history on Tuesday by electing Maxwell Alejandro Frost to the House of Representatives and sending the state’s 10th District Democratic nominee to Congress. Frost, a self-confessed fan of Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts series, may be the first member of Congress to know who can answer what a Xehanort is.
More importantly, Frost is the first generation Z candidate be elected into the house. He’s just 25 years old – only five years older than the Kingdom Hearts series itself and much younger than the average age of a US representative, which is 58.
To Frost’s victory on Tuesdayfirst reported by the Associated Pressa Tweet from him in 2017, in which he mentioned his defunct love for video games and the Kingdom Hearts series in particular, regained momentum. Frost tweeted at the time, “I haven’t played video games in years but I will always remember how awesome Kingdom Hearts is.” That tweet included a link to Yoko Shimomura’s “Dearly Beloved” from the Kingdom Hearts 2 Soundtrack. (For what it’s worth, Freeze earlier this year too tweeted his condolences in response to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Death of the creator Kazuki Takahashi. So there’s at least one Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan now in Congress too.)
Of course, being of Afro-Cuban descent, Frost was not running on a pro-Kingdom Hearts platform. He is a progressive running for office in a blue leaning district in the Orlando area of central Florida that normally elects a Democratic candidate. Frost champions abortion rights, gun control laws, fighting climate change, universal health coverage and expanding the Supreme Court, among other progressive ideals. For the past decade, he has worked with the American Civil Liberties Union on voter rights and with March for Our Lives, the student-led gun control law movement.
“I am Congressman-elect Maxwell Alejandro Frost and I will be the first member of Generation Z in the US Congress.” Frost tweeted late Tuesday. “WE MADE HISTORY!!! Don’t count young people out.”
