What was missing in both follow-ups was what made the first one Flashback Such a flashy game: the novelty of its rotoscopic animation, which got the protagonist Conrad Hart moving with a similar realism Prince of Persia or Another world. Combine that with an unusual focus on story for an action platformer and Flashback has all the markers of a cult hit that’s remarkably easy to play, like A remaster is available on most platforms.
As the existing sequels have shown, this is difficult to follow up Flashback in a modern style that doesn’t just feel like a generic action game – rotoscoping really came a long way in the early 90s. Maybe Flashback 2 will surprise us all.
