That Harry Potter Books and the universe they created are loved by millions. So it’s so unfortunate that the franchise’s creator, author JK Rowling, has repeatedly proven herself to be the worst kind of anti-transgender bigot. This bigotry is once again in the limelight as a big ticket Harry Potter Game Hogwarts legacy is due soon. It’s also likely why the popular left-leaning subreddit r/GamingCircleJerk basically only works in anti-Hogwarts legacy Feeling.
As the name suggests, r/GamingCircleJerk is a “Circlejerk” subreddit meant to be a tongue-in-cheek riff on r/Gaming. Most of the posts are jokes, but the occasional “unjerk” posts are sincere, as was the case with moderator GrizzlyPeak72 last Wednesday posted a photo of Rowling and the cover of the game along with the text: “A kind reminder from your mod team that this woman is a TERF and anyone who promises to financially support her is also a transphobe.” That post alone drew over 3,700 comments, and that’s just it Beginning.
“TERF” is, of course, short for “trans-exclusionary radical feminist,” which refers to self-proclaimed feminists who, strictly speaking, more or less oppose trans people’s right to exist in society. Rowling’s history of transphobic comments can be easily researched online, and I won’t repeat it here. Suffice it to say that calling them TERF is no exaggeration.
Discussion about the post and the broader mentality behind it spread across Reddit and social media. Some voices protested and claimed to support it Hogwarts legacy did not mean supporting Rowling’s beliefs. Others said that this is indeed the case, since buying the game financially supports the bigoted author. A few commenters brought up the questionable parts of the potter Canon itself. And still others somehow still seem to think that Rowling isn’t TERF at all, despite her frankness to repeat EXCELLENT ideology.
Many members of the GamingCircleJerk subreddit have shown support for the first post by Mod GrizzlyPeak72, in both to kid and serious ways, which isn’t surprising given that the group often scoffs at the narrow-minded anti-gay, anti-women, and anti-trans views that sadly still permeate gaming communities. GrizzlyPeak72, who posted the initial “unjerk,” said more than 1,000 transphobes have been banned from the subreddit since their post last week. There are also many people who have said that they are still planning to do this Play the game after pirating it. and even some in the Harry Potter underreddit have expressed concerns about the game, both for its content and the creator’s views.
But ultimately this is beaten ground, as the grief over Rowling’s worldview stretches back to the original books themselves. The series has long been criticized. stereotypical representations from do not know characters (if they exist at all), its chaotic allegories for racial and Social Injustice and its arguably racist and anti-Semitic depictions of house elves and goblins.
in the Harry Potter Canon, the goblins keep rebelling because they are being discriminated against. Unfortunately for would-be defenders of Hogwarts legacy, the plot description for the open world action RPG game as we know it, involves your character putting down a goblin rebellion allied with dark wizards, increasing the possibility that you effectively play the role of a magical cops. to hold down those who fight for a more just and just society. It is also concerning that the former main designer of Hogwarts legacy was an alt-right Gamergate troll.
Combined, the whole Harry Potter The franchise is being re-examined as people reckon with the idea that one of their childhood favorites might not be as great as they remember and struggle to determine if they can separate the art from the artist, particularly a who continues to benefit well of said art.
Hogwarts legacy tells gamers, “Your legacy is what you make of it.” That’s probably the most important thing to consider when weighing whether or not to pick up the game.
