After a few teases, Pixar has revealed the rest of the new emotions Inside Out 2.
The first trailer introduced Anxiety (Maya Hawke), the bundle of nerves who will most likely accompany Riley through her difficult teenage years. And in the new trailer, Anxiety brings along her friends: Envy (Ayo Edebiri), who has surprisingly big eyes and is, above all, in awe; Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), who immediately camps out on the couch in a huff; and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), a stocky figure with a bright pink blush.
The emotions present – joy (Amy Poehler), sadness (Phyllis Smith), fear (Tony Hale), anger (Lewis Black) and disgust (Liza Lapira) – must navigate Riley’s first year of high school with these newcomers. And those teenage years are it not simply.
But here’s the thing: Where the hell are these other emotions in the adults we see? One of the charming quirks of the first film was its brief glimpses into the emotions that govern the other human characters. The trailer shows us a brief glimpse into Riley’s mother’s mind, where we only see the five usual emotions. Does this mean that fear, boredom, envy and embarrassment are limited to teenage life? What happens to them afterwards? Are they absorbed into the five main themes? Go away?
(If so, sign me up for a world where adulthood means not being afraid!)
Either way, it’s not really a Pixar movie if the trailers don’t immediately raise a million new questions about the world-building. Maybe this will be addressed throughout the film, or maybe Inside Out 2 will be the new thing Elementary, This is the new thing cars.
Inside Out 2 hits theaters June 14th.
