[Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for the end of season 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina, in order to talk about what season 4 might bring.]
Vox Machina is more excited than ever at the end of season three. You’ve been through a lot; You’ve been to hell and back, literally; and one of them even died (for a not insignificant amount of time!). So it’s no surprise that they make big changes at the end of season three. Except that we’re currently watching a show called The Legend of Vox Machinaso one would hope that one day they would get back to the adventures we know and love.
And that day is soon! Or at least on the way: Prime Video announced on Wednesday that it would select The Legend of Vox Machina planned for a fourth season. That’s good, because while that ending was more or less a good place to leave our beautiful heroes, those strange, hooded cultists seemed to be conjuring up something nefarious at the end. And as Pike (Ashley Johnson) puts it: Who will they call if danger threatens again?
With Season 4 officially on the way, here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming season.
Is The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 Happening?
Prime Video has officially confirmed a fourth season of The Legend of Vox Machina on October 23rd. What was to be expected: There was Rumors in May suggested SAG-AFTRA production listings a fourth and even fifth Season was in development. Also, it seems very good to be in the Critical Role business right now. The troupe enjoys great success with dynamic, actual theatrical performances and fulfills their hopes for further live performances go on a world tour. With more animated adaptations on the way (more on that below), Critical Role is really hitting its stride (sorry), and Season 4 just seems like the logical solution.
“We are beyond excited – and grateful – to continue the epic and wild adventures of Vex, Vax, Keyleth, Percy, Pike, Grog and everyone’s favorite character – Scanlan,” said executive producer (and voice actor of Scanlan) Sam Riegel in a statement . “With each season, the level of this show rises and we already have big plans to improve both our heroes and our villains in season four.”
When will The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 be released on Prime Video?
Fans had to wait between a year and a year and a half between previous seasons. These seasons have been in production for a long time: When Prime Video acquired the rights in November 2019, the company announced that it would greenlight additional series before Season 1 even premiered. And before the second season premiere Vox Machina was renewed for the third season.
If there is an official extension notice, this is possible Vox Machina Season 4 follows more or less the same pattern, which means we can expect it sometime next year. But it’s likely we wouldn’t see it until late 2025 at the earliest, maybe even 2026.
What would Vox Machina Season 4 be about?
With a show like Vox Machina – adapting a real theater series and condensing dozens of hours into around six hours of TV – there are plenty of possibilities for where the story could take them next. One thing seems certain, however: no matter where Vox Machina ends up, they have real problems with the person introduced in the last teaser.
We won’t delve too much into spoilers for the campaign (you can always watch them if you want the full picture of what that final teaser was all about). However, since Vox Machina has decided to live their lives, it is likely that they will have to be deployed again to face this new enemy.
And life probably won’t be as easy as everyone hopes. While many Vox Machina members have risen, battled personal demons and won this season, the finale promises that there may still be a cost to all of that…
What Critical Role stuff should I watch while I wait for Season 4?
Well, there is of course the actual Critical Role channel, which not only contains a lot of the original Vox Machina game content, but also the newer spin-off series such as: Exandria Unlimited: Misfortune, bells, hells, and more. They even deviated from pure Dungeons & Dragons and developed their own systems.
There is also the assembly Mighty no Passion that you can act on. This original campaign is also on YouTube, but it is also being adapted to Prime Video. No release date has been given, but Travis Willingham (who plays Grog) tells Polygon that production is well underway.
“We wrote the entire first season. The storyboards will all be locked if they weren’t already locked. So we go to our studio abroad. We get animation tests back and see things appear in color again. We designed all the characters. The magical spells and effects are taken into account. We talk about music and how it will be different Voxsaid Willingham at Fantastic Fest. “So it’s definitely more than halfway done and I think everyone is going to be really excited about the result.”
