Battlefield 2042, a game that has floated upstream since launch, needs both new content and some serious fixes, and fast. In a major presentation made to fans earlier today, developers DICE revealed that players will be getting a little bit of both. Ultimately.
In a blog post called Battlefield Briefing: Development Updatethe game’s community manager outlines a long laundry list of things coming as part of the game’s seasonal updates, along with a guide to some of the changes being made to some maps (some of these have already been discussed) and several other improvements made to everything from player animation to the game’s much-criticized voice acting.
As long as this laundry list is-a lot of it was already known, it’s just the timing and the totality of it all This is rounded up here—that overwhelming feeling among fans is that it’s all the things that should have been in the game at launch, or if they don’t release soon after, and it’s not like packaging everything as some sort of series of updates coming almost a year after the Release of the game should appear a great look.

Another thing that’s coming and only mentioned briefly is that the game’s specialists are in line for a rework. The tonal dissonance between the game’s gritty climate catastrophe setting and the slapstick specialists was one of the game’s main criticisms, so DICE went back to the drawing board and changed both their voice acting and their look.
For example, here’s how they change Angel, whose one-liners are by far the most flashy:
DICE will also be changing the look of some of the specialists, as you can see below where Mackay is transformed into a guy who tweets “cry more, libs” and Boris just gets a glow-up:
The dismay among the game’s remaining fans – which I am – isn’t that any of this is bad or unnecessary. Most of it is looking good and new maps and vehicles are welcome! It’s more the packaging and timing of everything, as everything it does is keen on how undercooked and unfinished this game was at launch (something I think EA would deserve almost all the blame for, eh surely DICE itself would have known what state the game was in) and how far it still has to go to match the kind of experience the series is known for.
