Few things go together better than summertime movies and basking sharks, which is why we should all be thankful that Megalodons are making a return to theaters with it The Meg 2: The Trench. The first trailer for the action blockbuster starring Jason Statham was released on Monday and it already features all sorts of ridiculous action, including a Megalodon taking on its similarly prehistoric cousin, the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The film is a direct sequel to 2018 That I, brings back Statham’s Jonas Taylor, a professional underwater rescuer and sharkbreaker, to once again face the terrors of the deep. This time, however, the megs hunt in packs, they fight giant squid, and the whole beach is in danger. But Statham is even better prepared with all the Meg fighting knowledge he gained from the first film.
While moviegoers might remember That I slightly derisive, it’s a bit underrated at this point, and quite a funny giant monster movie anchored perfectly by Statham’s endless wellsprings of charm. what does The I 2 so special, however, is a change in direction: Ben Wheatley replaced National Treasure Director Jon Turtletaub from the first film.
Wheatley is a particularly odd choice for a film like this, given his career so far has focused on smaller indie action and horror films such as kill list And tourists. From the trailer it seems like he has a vision for The I 2 and an extraordinary understanding of how cool a giant prehistoric shark can be. That coupled with his usual stylistic flair should do it The I 2 something special – even more special than a normal film about megalodons is of course.
All The I 2‘s Dino-on-Dino action hits theaters August 4th.
