It sounds like that Mortal Kombat Movie sequel has found his Johnny Cage in The young And Lord of the Rings Actor Karl Urban.
The wrap broke the news first, and IGN has now verified it with its own sources. It sounds like Urban is in final talks to play the movie star and martial artist. Johnny was not present in the first film, but was hinted at by a movie poster in the film’s final scenes when protagonist Cole Young traveled to Los Angeles to find the series’ staple. Johnny’s absence in the first film caught the eye of longtime fans, but director Simon McQuoid did told diversity They chose not to include him because he is such a big personality that he would derail the story and be the center of attention.
This isn’t the first Mortal Kombat great personalities were missing. Josh Lawson’s vulgar and violent Kano occupied that spot in the 2021 film, but due to the events of the first film, he is unlikely to appear in the sequel. So Urban’s Johnny is primed to fit into that dynamic Mortal Kombat 2.
Urban has been fairly prominent in many franchise roles. He has appeared in the above The young, Lord of the Ringsas well as star trek movies & Thor: Ragnarok. He also has some experience in video game adaptation, having played Doomguy in 2005 demise Movie.
What role Johnny will play in the sequel is unknown, and we don’t know much about the sequel at this point, other than that the combatants will face a much greater threat from Shang Tsung. The 2021 film was… good? It was lightning bolts of fun, silly at some moments and downright stupid at others. It was a good popcorn movie to watch at home, but I would have felt a lot worse paying to see it at a theater. Luckily, it was one of the films that launched almost simultaneously at home and in theaters during the Covid-19 pandemic, so I saw it on HBO Max instead of in a theater. Maybe the sequel will improve on those things, or maybe it’s part of the charm for some.
In any case, sorry to everyone who wanted WWE Star The Miz to play Johnny, including Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon and my city Associate writer Isaiah Colbert.
