Announced and premiered last year, Connecting worlds– the documentary about the famous game director Hideo Kojima– is now available to everyone on Disney+. And while it may only appeal to Kojima superfans, at least it’s not very long, clocking in at a cool 60 minutes, about 11 minutes less than the famous video game auteur’s longest cutscene.
Produced by PlayStation Studios and Kojima Productions, Hideo Kojima: Connecting worlds is primarily a documentary about the early life of Metal Gear Solid Creatorand also a look at how he now develops games in his independent studio. As a former My city wrote author Ashley Bardhan in 2023:
“It avoids the subject of Konami (which Kojima left behind after three decades, both establishing his career and cementing a somewhat timid reputation) entirely, and spends most of its running time on select moments.” Death Stranding‘s production.”
Ironically, for a man known for making games that typically feature very long cutscenes, the film documentary (which he neither directed nor edited) is only 60 minutes long according to Disney+. If a film about Kojima is just another one of his infamous cutscenes, where does it land in comparison to some of his biggest and longest? Well, right at the top, but not at the summit.
Kojima’s longest cutscene can be found in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Somewhere near the end of the game, a series of cutscenes begin, with no gameplay in between, that continue for a long time 71 minutes. I remember putting my controller down and forgetting I was even playing a game about halfway through.
Some other long cutscenes, which are technically shorter than his new documentary, include the Fast 30 minute end Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater And another half-hour ending sequence Death Stranding. The guy wasn’t kidding when he wrote in his Twitter bio, “70% of my body is movies.”
