Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy origin is neither a remake nor a prequel to the original final fantasy, which will celebrate its 35th anniversary later this year. Instead, the upcoming one is action-packed final fantasy Spinoff is something like an interpretation of the time warp story of the classic RPG.
A new (and final) trailer for the game, featuring music by Frank Sinatra, hints at its emotional, tragic stakes.
Players will experience this story from the perspective of Jack and his allies, who believe themselves to be prophetic warriors of the light on an infamous quest to slay Chaos, the final boss of the original final fantasy. There is much about Jack and his would-be warriors of light that remains a mystery Stranger of Paradise. And a new trailer for the upcoming game, due for release in March, adds more mysteries – or possibly some new clues as to how Jack and Co.’s mission to kill Chaos will unfold.
The developers of Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin have already essentially spoiled one component of their game: Jack is Jack Garland, aka Garland, aka the other big villain of final fantasy
Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin Producer Jin Fujiwara told Polygon in an interview that while familiarity with the events of Final Fantasy will certainly provide context for Jack’s violent journey through the land of Cornelia, it is not a requirement for enjoying his story.
“The game is designed in such a way that you don’t necessarily have to be familiar with the original final fantasy‘ said Fujiwara through an interpreter. “If you understand the original title, it might help expand on the lore you are familiar with. We have our heroes who believe they are the warriors of light, but they actually turn out to be the enemy, Garland. When you fight the four others [fiends]how this came about is shown in Stranger of Paradise
With Jack Garland’s turn from ostensible protagonist to antagonist Garland, I asked Fujiwara why the team decided to reveal his fate so early – and if Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is a tragedy.
“With our introduction of the title […] We have shown that for a warrior of light [Jack] came across as much more violent than a typical hero,” Fujiwara said. “The team was thinking rather than being hung in the air – with players speculating, ‘Wait, this is way more intense than we anticipated. This hero character seems much older and more mature compared to a typical Final Fantasy protagonist.’ – Instead of fooling people, the team felt it would be better if we were more transparent about what the story was going to be about. So we decided that while we wanted to reveal this as a story about the villain, there was a rich story behind it that we wanted to show. I felt that this would allow us to communicate much more clearly with our players.”
Fujiwara continued: “I don’t think we can sum it up in one sentence, [to say] if it’s a tragedy. It’s not necessarily just a sad story. It is very difficult to put your finger on it. But it shows the story of these protagonists who go into the narrative believing that they are warriors of the light but end up becoming villains.
“There is a reason behind all the events that are happening. So while it’s not quite a tragedy, we want to feel like this is a Final Fantasy title. So we want to have that sense of hope in it too. It is very difficult to describe it in a few words. So we would like to encourage players to try the story and find out for themselves.”
A new trailer for Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, which was released Monday and is partially set to Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” certainly points to tragedy. It teases forgotten memories and lost loves, how Jack’s consuming rage will lead to regret, and the ultimate fate of the hopeful warriors of the light. Fujiwara said the decision to use Sinatra’s stirring signature song, later covered by Elvis Presley and Sid Vicious, exemplifies Jack’s journey.
“The story will show Jack how he lived and the choices he made throughout his life,” Fujiwara explained. “And the fact that he’s sort of living his life and making the decisions that he’s going to be confident in and not regret, we felt really apt to the lyrics of ‘My Way’ so we wanted to incorporate that song [in the trailer].”
Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy origin will be released on March 18 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC (via the Epic Games Store), Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
