F1 delta timean official NFT and crypto-powered racing game that launched back in 2019 closed its doors last month, leaving those who spent money and invested in the project probably wishing they had done something else with their time.

The game – which was one of the first licensed NFT titles years before other leagues and sports fell into the scam –announced its closure on March 15which gives users … a day before the game shutdown on March 16th. If you’ve never seen it before F1 delta time before, and you’re thinking “Wow, did I miss an exciting Formula 1 racing game?!?!”, didn’t you:

Games shut down all the time, but what’s notable about this one is that at one point it was a pretty big deal, at least in this cursed room! Example: The most expensive NFT sold in 2019 was a car for this gamewhich cost over $100,000, and a combination of the official F1 license and a promised ability for players to “play to make money” made it an early test case for how NFT-based games might work.

Item sales had been flat for over two years prior to the closure

However, since Animoca owners can’t renew the F1 license, it’s now also a test case of what happens when a licensed NFT game dies because all that money was spent on cars and other items – some players would later spend nearly $300,000 on assingle transaction – is now seemingly worthless. Sure, the tokens themselves live on, but without the game they were purchased for, there’s no actual value there.

The developers are fully aware of this and have promised the owners of these F1 NFTs that they can now have some generic spare tokens for a whole year other racing game instead:

As part of our commitment to an open ecosystem, we offer F1® Delta Time asset owners the following options:

As I said, games are shutting down all the time, and many of them have had players spending money on items, levels, weapons, and other types of digital content. The difference is that in regular video games, these are part of the experience; The items of this game, like everything else related to crypto, were designed as investment.
