Sony's PlayStation 2 had a long life cycle. It was released in 2000 and the last game was released for it arrived in 2013. But the PlayStation 4 could be on its way to breaking this impressive record. In fact, it could destroy it.
The PlayStation 4 was released on November 15, 2013. This means we're now entering the 12th year of Sony's home console. Typically, at this point in a console's life, few if any new games are released for it. However, this is not the case with the PS4, with over 20 games scheduled to release on the aging machine in 2025.
Here are 22 new games coming to PS4 (and other platforms) this year. Keep in mind that this is probably not a complete list and it is possible that more games will be announced for PS4 later in the year.

Now, as mentioned with the PS2, it's not uncommon for very popular video game consoles to continue to receive new game releases a decade after the device's launch. A large install base is a large install base. But usually this far into a console's lifespan you get, say, one or two new games. For example in 2018– 12 years after the release of the PlayStation 3 – we got two new PS3 games and one of these FIFA 19.
What we're experiencing with the PS4 in its 12th year is unlike anything else in modern gaming history. At least nearly two dozen games are scheduled to come to PS4 this year, and not all of them are sports games or old ports. Some are brand new remasters, some are smaller 2D titles, and some are big AAA games Dying Light: The Beast And Elden Ring Nightreign.
Console generations are no longer the same as before
And before anyone attacks me for thinking releasing PS4 games in 2025 is a bad thing, I want to be clear: I'm not saying that. Most AAA video game studios have moved to more powerful hardware, so I don't think the industry will be slowed down by the PS4 (or, for that matter, the Xbox One, which is also getting new games).
The reality is that the video game industry and market in 2025 is very different than it used to be. In the age of the PS2 and even the PS3, technology advanced rapidly, from 2D to 3D to HD to 4K. Every few years new consoles became more necessary. That will not be the case in 2025.
The PS4 is still a pretty capable machine, especially for indie developers or people making smaller games or RPGs using pre-built tools and technology. And thanks to digital marketplaces, you don't have to stock your game at Walmart to sell copies. It also helps that modern engines like Unreal and Unity are very scalable and flexible, allowing a single game to run on Switch, PS4, PS5 and even mobile devices.
Oh, and let's not forget that some of the most popular games right now –Fortnite, Call of Duty Warzone, Genshin Impact, Overwatch 2, GTA Online, Minecraft, And Roblox– are all on PS4 and continue to receive updates every month. There's a huge group of gamers who don't feel the need to move on because the big games they play every week are still active and alive on PS4. Therefore, it is not shocking that developers are still making many games for the 12 years. old console in 2025.
The real question now is whether the PS4 can last longer than the PS2. I think that works. Even if there are only half as many PS4 games released next year as in 2025, there will still be over 10. We may even release PS4 games leading up to the release of a theoretical PS6 and beyond. Wild stuff.
