Blocked downloads. Crashes while games are suspended. Occasional freezing. The PS5 has some great games and it was fun to finally have some time for the future of PlayStation, but the next-gen console had some weird issues.
Today Sony offered a workaround for one of the most discussed issues known as download queue errors. Some gamers have found that when choosing a game to download on the PS5, the PS5 will start downloading right away, and then …Nothing. The progress bar will be 0% and will be downloaded indefinitely, regardless of how many times players try to start the process again.
The solution used to be to completely reset the console to factory settings. However, doing this was extremely tedious and meant deleting a bunch of data, especially if you had already transferred everything from your PS4. Now Sony is suggesting players start their PS5s in Security mode (Turn on the console by holding the power button for a few seconds) and select the option Instead, rebuild the database. This fixes the issue without deleting anything, but it still requires some legwork and is nowhere near ideal for a brand new next-gen console.
Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the meantime, there are other issues that don’t seem to have been resolved. One of them is the system that crashes in suspend mode. Instead of turning on again, the PS5 beeps and goes through an extended startup sequence. The system repairs the console memory as if you unplugged it while it was running.
It is unclear why this is happening and what problems, if any, may arise for the console in the long run. As a result, some Users simply suggested Turn off sleep mode entirely in the settings menu and Closing a game before shutting down the system.
Then there is the problem that the PS5 sometimes installs and runs the PS4 versions of games by default even when a PS5 disc is used. It’s easy to fix the problem by manually switching to the next generation version. However, if you are not careful, this is what you can do end up playing the wrong version. Despite one thing official workaround for this from ActivisionI still had Black Ops Cold War occasionally the PS4 version by default.
More frustrating are the occasional freezes and crashes while gaming. I had Cold War freeze me a couple of times when you restart missions, and KotakuEditor-in-chief mentioned Miles Morales When it froze the couple of times, he tried jumping into different areas of the game with the PS5’s activity cards.
It’s hard to know how much these freezes are console issues versus issues with the respective games, but it made the PS5’s first week in the wild a little more nervous than I’d like. Hopefully these rough edges will continue to sand down over time.
