Yesterday, the studio behind the Nintendo Switch port of Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords announced that it finally fixed a groundbreaking bug that had previously appeared made the game impossible to finish.

Previously those who bought Obsidian’s port war of stars RPG were forced to cheat their way past game-destroying cutscenes. This was resolved via an in-game cheat menu, but it was still a band-aid fix at best. my box Tried using this method to skip a breakthrough cutscene at the end of a late game questline, but boarding the ship would only cause the game to crash again. But rejoice: the broken cutscenes have finally been fixed. Type of.

After updating the game, I was finally able to play the previously problematic cutscenes without being ejected onto my Switch home screen. However, there is a caveat. KOTOR 2 has a special ability that increases your movement speed, and it’s essential for a game that forces you to traverse quite a bit of empty space. The trade-off is that the game forces a blurry filter across your screen while the skill is active. The new patch may have fixed the cutscenes, but it does ensure that those blurry filters carry over to the cutscenes. Here’s how to get rough-looking screenshots like this one:

KOTOR 2 has a lot of movie scenes that autoplay when you cross an invisible border, so you can’t really manually turn off the filter when they start playing. The blur stops after the skill duration expires, but it may have degraded my experience a bit. But hey, at least I can go to other planets now!

Did Aspyr knowingly release an uncraftable game? Yes. am i annoyed Also yes. But I recognize that the vanilla version of KOTOR 2 was also released in a broken and buggy state. Maybe it’s one of those games that are always doomed to imperfection. In any case, I recommend keeping several save backups in case there are more terrible bugs waiting for you at the end of the game.
