Steven UniverseThe art style is characterized by a cute, iconic sense of style. But the original design that featured in the unpublished pilot was very different. Not worse, mind you, but a little less simplified, a little stranger. We never saw that Steven Universe. But a new fan animation gives a hint of how it would have been.

The short, carefully animated clip was created by Blanca Martinez, also known as animator and Twitter user @EscapeComplex, and takes on Pearl’s original design to dramatize a pivotal moment from the series. In particular, it’s the ending of “It’s Over, Isn’t It,” one of the most heartbreaking and character defining songs in the series. It’s breathtaking work, really.

If you want more info on this original pilot, it was finally posted on YouTube and there’s a good breakdown on that Steven Universe Fan Wiki Here. While I’m very happy with the show we got, I’m just as excited to get such a good look at what could have been.
