WrestleQuest is a breath of fresh air packed with everything that makes a phenomenal wrestling game plus all the crazy gimmicks of a fantasy action role-playing game.
Developed by Mega Cat Studios, WrestleQuest is a turn-based RPG with action figures living in a toy box-like fantasy world and competing in slobbering wrestling matches. The game follows rookie wrestler Randy “Muchacho Man” Santos as he makes his way through seedy underground wrestling federations to become a great world champion like his idol and WWE Hall of Famer Macho man Randy Savage. To get there, Muchacho Man must make his mark on the local wrestling scene by defeating champions in hopes of getting called up to the big leagues where he can take on even tougher and more famous wrestlers.
After four hours of playing a hands-on preview of WrestleQuestit’s clear that the game is not only an accessible and enjoyable game for die-hard wrestling fans and newcomers alike, but it also seamlessly blends the larger-than-life personalities of pro wrestling with the whimsy of a fantasy RPG.
WrestleQuest features deep wrestling gameplay mechanics that are intuitive
WrestleQuest plays like “The Strongest” storyline at Square Enix live one life reissue if it would reinforce the pro wrestling aspect of its fighting game-like tournament. At the beginning you choose your wrestler variantwhether that’s an underdog, a showman, or a powerhouse, which everyone has their advantages and disadvantages. For example, I wanted my Muchacho Man to have a technical wrestler style AEW‘S Bryan Danielson. In real life, technical wrestlers are typically good at engaging their opponents in submission holds and possess exceptional ring awareness, allowing them to think further outside the box than the average wrestler.
A technical wrestling style in WrestleQuest manifests itself in your character applying more debuffs to opponents and dealing extra damage through gimmicks (with the caveat that your normal attacks deal less damage). Fight in WrestleQuest are turn-based one-on-one, tag team, and six-man games Matches in which you can strike in a quick time event, use special moves (gimmicks), taunt your party and opponents, and use items Fashion. Gimmicks include your wrestler’s signature and finishing moves (which consume action points) as well as pinfalls (which do not consume AP). pinfalls initiate A Mini game in which you have to hit a moving rectangle three times in a short period of time.
WrestleQuest‘S The nod of real wrestling culture will have you in a chokehold
Much like real wrestling, the pace is one WrestleQuest The game depends on how much hype you and your opponent generate. If you miss too many prompts, the hype will shift from you to your opponent, giving them more buffs. However, with the right combination of gimmick attacks, punches, and well-timed taunts, you can lure the virtual crowd back to your corner of the square circle and take down your opponent for a three-pointer. The game even offers special matches Conditions where you get bonus items when you kill opponents in a specific order with specific moves. You can also customize the music and pyrotechnics for your Character appearances before a big game.
On paper, all these mechanisms may sound as boring as that WWE 2K Wrestling simulator approach to the series. In wwe 2k, The games are packed with mini-games that take away from the fun you want to have, though WrestleQuestThe wrassling-themed features never felt too overwhelming to analyze. Nor did they become monotonous. This balance is due in part to how the otherwise dense wrestling terminology is packaged within it an accessible action-RPG world.
WrestleQuest also tells his story in a wrestling podcast and effortlessly integrates wrestling terminology so the spoils of your hard-fought matches feel like the chronicles of a once-in-a-lifetime talent. Big money games start with promo segments where you get to decide which hilarious comebacks Muchacho Man will spit into his mic, which is not only as fun as watching it in real life Wordsmith wrestlers in promos but can also assist in matches. Those real nods were a delight every time. I’m particularly impressed WrestleQuestThe requirement that I reach a table seat to unlock a path to the treasure. I never thought removing an obstacle in an RPG was like trying to destroy a stable wrestling table.
WrestleQuest gets the details right
Many wrestling games give theatre Outside the ring short game, if there is any non-ring gameplay at all. To my surprise, my pleasure was on the ropes of WrestleQuestMatching the many rings was my gallantry trip through the game’s walkable 2D cities and environments filled with colorful characters. The wacky side quests and characters seemed to go a long way in emphasizing the tone of the game’s larger world, rather than just marginally distracting from it. I lit up when I found out I could chat with him gundam-like characters, a depressed lizard man and real life wrestling superstars like Jake “The Snake” Roberts And Jeff Jarrett. And the random wrestling encounters in those areas were absolutely hilarious. To see a ring for a match appear out of nowhere, as if a Pokemon Arena just might appear as a dog on the sidewalk The pedestrians who crossed paths on the street always tickled me.
In total, WrestleQuest’S The attention to detail in the wrestling terminology, the charming pixel art and the focus on a fun fantasy RPG make it stand out compared to other contemporary wrestling games.
WrestleQuest is scheduled for release on August 8th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, PC and the Netflix app.
