Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ new Blightcaller class is kinda weird

For those who love the grind, Tiny Tina’s Wonderland is border areas Heaven. For those who don’t, it’s a solid shooter that lacks the sharp hooks of a true-to-form live-service game. I imagine that dynamic will remain largely the same after the game’s latest expansion, which adds the game’s first new class since launch: the Blightcaller.

Released in March for consoles and PC, Tiny Tina’s Wonderland is a fantasy spin-off from Gearbox border areas Series of loot shooters. Historical, border areas Entries have placed an emphasis on rich, story-driven post-release expansions. (wonderland itself is technically a follow-up to one of those: Borderlands 2is great Attack on the Dragon Fortress.) But for wonderlandGearbox instead opted to release four smaller packs called Mirrors of Mystery. each a sort of series of combat chambers– light in story, hard in looting and shooting.

However, the price remained more or less the same.

The fourth of these expansions, Shattered Spectreglass, was released yesterday and is available individually or as part of the game’s Season Pass. The most interesting aspect is the rollout of the Blightcaller classwhich shows the total number of classes available wonderland up to seven (and the total number of dual grades up to a number that I’ll, uh, need one of you who knows math for).

Blightcaller is a strange class. While the standard edition wonderland classstick bomber is your assassin type Brr serker is for melee oriented builds and whatnot – cleanly map classes from previous versions border areas Games the blightcaller does not have an easy sequence. In general, it is dealing elemental damage. But it also has a companion. And a focus on defense rather than offense.

For example, there are a few abilities that increase your damage proportionally station (wonderland parlance for “shield”) that you have. ghost tank restores a portion of your wards for each enemy killed. That fits together Flawless edge; Every point you invest in the skill increases your damage output by 6 percent when you have full protection.

his ability to act, Swamp Totem, summons a small tree companion that fires a barrage of tiny evil skulls that attack and attack enemies. But here’s the real attraction: these skulls match the elemental type of weapon you’ve equipped. Combine that with that ghost in the shell Ability – which summons a similar barrage, one that deals out poison Damage every time you land a critical hit – and you’re pretty much a constant stream of elemental projectiles, dealing damage from up to three different elemental types at once.

I hooked up last night my box‘s Zack Zwiezen for a new one wonderland Play through. I was playing around with a new Blightcaller character, and we played through to the end of the Thy Bard, With A Vengeance story mission, where you get to choose a subclass. (Because Zack didn’t have access to the expansion, he couldn’t select Blightcaller as either a primary or secondary class.)

There is no obvious match – such as the Clawbringer and spore guardresulting the superior ones wildfire double class– but I finally decided on them spore guard also for my blightcaller, since he comes with a little mushroom monster as a companion. Now I’m a cool AF-sounding one mushroom spirit. Those of the Blightcaller active decay Skill increases poison damage and makes the little mushroom monster more powerful. I’m excited to see how these two progress through this playthrough.

That is, if I keep playing.

The blightcaller is a blast, sure. But it doesn’t radically change the game. Look, this is my fourth wonderland Character. Maybe it’s because I’ve sat through the intro 5 times now (I lost a character because I have no idea what happened) but rerolling really cleared the gap between the last few for me border areas Games and the originals: wonderlandand somehow borderland 3 before that exist in the murky purgatory between a typical campaign oriented game and a live service game.

For a time I absolutely loved the endgame mode Chaos Chamber., which with its roguelike elements and seemingly limitless legendary loot drops. But it was starting to feel like a grind for the sake of the grind, all in the endless service of making bigger numbers so you can make even bigger numbers. Maybe if you really are Yes, really Luck – like-lotto-win-many-luck – you will be at the end One of 85 billion pieces of gear to find. wonderland has the compulsive repetition of a live service without the nudge spurred by the steady stream of content you would get with a true-to-form live service game: a rotation of cosmetics, limited-time seasonal events (even borderland 3 had some of these), new areas that don’t cost $10 each, a social space to gather with other players. The addition of the Blightcaller class doesn’t change this dynamic.

So, for me at least, the grind has gone stale. That’s fine! Games can just be over. It’s entirely your right to enjoy a game, have a really damn good time, and then…move on to the next. when you start wonderland For the first time, sure, yes I would say going for a Blightcaller build would be a good choice. But if you’ve been waiting with bated breath for this new class to revive the game, you’d better wait borderland 4.
