The Olympic Triathlons’ bicycle division makes a nice lap around the giant Gundam statue in Odaiba’s DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, which means that commentators occasionally have to try to describe the matter.

I can’t speak for other nations’ commentators, but the poor guy who handles the BBC’s broadcast just did his best (like Captured here by Kero Kero Bonito producer Gus Lobban, Many Thanks!):

To be fair, it’s not also far away! A few years ago the original Gundam Statue was replaced with a new one, and the new one is from Gundam unicorn mobile suitso the unicorn part is almost right!

But I can’t help him with Gandum.

Yes that was Final Fantasy At the Olympic ceremony. And there is more!

For the nerdy among us, Japan is practically synonymous with video games. And if you’ve played video games and happened to see the opening ceremony of the biggest sporting event of the year, you probably said, “Wait a minute, is that …?” Oh, that was it. In fact, there have been a number of musical references that will likely only be readable by gamers, especially those with a penchant for classic Japanese role-playing games.
