Is Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater coming back… again? Tony Hawk doesn’t want to say it explicitly, but it certainly sounds like it somethingtakes place around the 25th anniversary of the franchise, according to recent comments from the professional skater himself. Hawk himself calls these developments “incredibly exciting”.
In a new episode of the YouTube channel Mythical KitchenOn the Last Meal, host Josh Scherer asked Hawk what’s next for the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise as we celebrate its silver anniversary. Hawk, who can hit a 900 but can’t get out of a non-disclosure agreement without hurting himself, replied, “I wish I could tell you more, but I can tell you that I’ve spoken to Activision again – which is insanely exciting. We’re working on something. This is the first time I’ve said this publicly. I can’t give any specifics. […] but I think it will be something that the fans will really appreciate.”
The most recent entry in the franchise was the remaster of the first two games in the Pro Skater franchise in 2020. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2. The remaster was the last game from series developer Vicarious Visions before it was absorbed into Blizzard Entertainment in 2021. According to Hawk and game designer Andy Gentile, the studio was at one point working on remastered content from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 And 4but that work was abandoned when Vicarious joined Blizzard.
Hawk’s announcement of new events surrounding the Pro Skater franchise for its 25th anniversary comes after a recent change to the series’ social media accounts. Instagram And X (formerly known as Twitter), the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater profiles have received new logos in recent weeks, from branding to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 to a more comprehensive THPS iconography. The Instagram account has also started running new advertisements for the 2020 remaster, which based on my own social media doomscrolling suggests something may be coming for that entry.
The original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was released on September 29, 1999 for PlayStation, so a possible reveal could be imminent. The last original entry in the franchise was in 2015 Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5which was developed by Robomodo and was widely panned by players and critics. Robomodo has since been shut down.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 is available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. If you own it, be sure to download it again now.
