Former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential candidate, JD Vance, is campaigning to prove he’s not a boring, charisma-less nutcase. It’s not going well.
Last week, Donald Trump announced that he had chosen Ohio Senator JD Vance is his candidate for vice president. Vance is known for being terriblebut also for writing his memoirs, which are a bestseller—Hillbilly Elegy– which was turned into a forgettable Netflix movie starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close. Oh, and he also once called Trump a “moral disaster” and possibly “America’s Hitler.” And apparently Trump now regrets choosing the boring guy following the recent announcement that Joe Biden is dropping out of the 2024 presidential race and Kamala is likely to replace him on the ballot.
Anyway, Vance is on the campaign trail, attending rallies and trying to convince people that he’s just a regular guy who drinks a Diet Mountain Dew or even two(!), even though those damn Democrats and liberals probably think that’s racist…or something.
During a rally in Middletown, Ohio on Monday, Vance said:
“To me, that’s the strangest thing. The Democrats say it’s racist to believe… Well, they say it’s racist to do anything.”
Then he paused for a moment, and the silence in the hall was hard to miss. Perhaps he realized that the sentence had not gone down well, so he continued and quickly added:
“I had a Diet Mountain Dew yesterday. And one today. I’m sure you’ll call that racist too, but…”
He paused again, this time for a longer time. You might hear two people laughing in the background. The audience behind Vance mostly didn’t react or just smiled briefly and nervously. At this point I would recommend Vance stop and continue with this part. But instead he dug his grave even deeper.
“It’s good,” Vance added. That got a few more laughs, but mostly because the audience seemed to realize at that point that this guy is trying to be funny. Vance then made the biggest joke mistake: He laughed too hard at his own bad joke. And then, as if he was sticking to a script where that line was a knockout and the audience was laughing, Vance pointed to the confused people and said, “I love you guys.”
What followed were a few seconds of one person clapping loudly and Vance laughing even harder. Meanwhile, somewhere in the world, I IImagine Trump wondering why he let his idiotic sons persuade him to choose this guy.
