Image for article titled Someone Spent $120,000 on a Very Rare Magikarp Pokemon Card

the Pokemon card madness is not soon slow down, it appears. Case in point: someone recently sold $125,000 at auction for a single super rare Magikarp card that was part of a Japanese pokIt ismon snap Doctorate in the 90s.

As discovered by NintendoLife and first reported by Ludkins Mediaa very rare Magikarp Pokémon card that has reappeared via an auction listing Japan a few months ago on Yahoo. The map had not been seen for more than two decades prior to listing, leading some to question if it ever existed or if copies were still out there. The verified and PSA rated card

ended up selling for about a staggering 15 million yen, which is more than $125,000 today.

Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) is a company that specializes in verifying the authenticity of trading cards and other memorabilia. The company is one of the most trusted among collectors and buyers.

What makes this particular Magikarp so damn rare is that of the 20 copies made, they were all given to one person as part of a larger one pokIt ismon snap competition held in Japan. The competition asked children to send in pictures taken in the N64 game. The 10 winning images were selected and all turned into custom cards. Each winner received 20 copies of their individual card. The winners could easily have boxed them up, forgotten them, and never sold them or traded them with anyone else, making them even rarer on the public market than if 20 copies were given out separately.

This is supposedly the first time a Magikarp snap Map was publicly auctioned. It is also the first of its kind to be verified by the PSA rating society.

In a video uploaded this weekYouTuber smprate showed the rare Magikarp card and discussed its history, rarity and value, although it is unclear who bought the card and how Smpratte was allowed to use it. In the video, he says it was sent to him by a “longtime good friend and business associate.”

According to him, he considers this one of the rarest Pokemon maps ever made. Considering it took over 20 years before we could get a video of it or have it verified by a ratings company, I’m inclined to agree.

This is far from the most expensive Pokemon Map sold in recent years. In fact, we have an entire list dedicated to the most expensive and rarest cards ever sold at auction. which you can view here. Alternatively if you want to see an example of someone being screwed by all of this Pokemon speculative buying and sellingyou can always read about how Logan Paul spent more than $3 million for what he thought Pokemon cards but instead were worthless GI Joe tickets. Try not to laugh too much.
