According to a new report, Unity is cutting about 1,800 jobs, or about 25 percent of its employees Reuters on Monday.
This is reportedly the largest wave of layoffs in the software company’s history – far larger than the layoffs that took place in 2011 November last year– and it will be completed by the end of March. Unity has experienced three rounds of layoffs in the last 12 months.
“We are … reducing the number of things we do to focus on our core business and drive our long-term success and profitability,” interim CEO Jim Whitehurst wrote in an internal memo obtained by Reuters. The memo was sent to all Unity employees on January 8th.
My city Unity Software has reached out for comment.
Unity Software’s flagship product is the Unity Engine, a flexible and popular game engine that supports numerous games large and small – including Hearthstone And Pokémon GO. The company was at the center of a massive controversy last September when it announced changes to the way it would charge developers and publishers to use its technology. Developers might have to pay for each installation, which could be costly for free-to-play mobile hits or popular games on platforms like Steam. After the failed rollout of these changes, there was quickly a major backlash from developers. At some point it got so loud The company apologized and walked back the most of his new plans.
In October, shortly after all this happened, Unity’s then-CEO John Ricetello resigned. At this point, current interim CEO Whitehurst took over the company. In November, during the latest round of layoffs, the new CEO claimed the company needed a “reset to default.”
These recent layoffs continue a terrible trend in the video game industry, which has been in crisis An estimated 6,000 jobs will be lost in 2023. And it seems things will not get better in 2024.
