On Friday, The United States Supreme Court ruled Roe v. Wade overruled in a 6-3 vote that took away the constitutional right to choose an abortion. The United States had protected Americans’ right to abortion for half a century; The landmark judgment in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization undoes decades of progress and presents the possibility that other established rights could be overridden, such as the right to same-sex marriage and contraception.
States must now decide individually whether abortion is legal, and in response to the Supreme Court’s decision, nine states have already banned the procedure. Twelve more states likely to ban or severely restrict access to abortion care according to the New York Times. People seeking abortions in these states will be forced to travel abroad for medical care and if they are unable to travel they have no other option.
As The Verge reported in May, abortion bans in dozens of states will further tie health care to employers and workplaces. Now that Roe v. Wade was lifted Many companies have released statements declare their intention to support employees who need to travel to receive this procedure. Video game studios are joining companies across industries by expanding health packages to include abortion insurance and medical travel services. Workers living in affected areas and working at these companies can apply for funding to get the care they need, but this gives employers exceptional powers. Without a nationwide right to healthcare, companies must step in, making inequalities visible across the healthcare system.
