“Away from the stolen paths” is a timed quest that you can pick up Dragon’s Dogma 2 after tracking down the coral snakes along the way “Mercy among thieves.” The idea is to learn more about the child you followed in Mercy Among Thieves and help them start a new life.
Our Dragon’s Dogma 2 The guide will show you how to start Off the Pilfered Path, what quests you should complete before starting, what steps are required to complete it, etc how to help Hugo find a job.
Before you begin Off the Pilfered Path, complete these quests
“Off the Pilfered Path” ties into several other quests – some directly and others indirectly. And the results of these other quests affect the ending of Pilfered Path. The timed portion of Off the Pilfered Path doesn’t start until about halfway through, giving you as much time as you need to complete everything else.
‘Every rose has thorns’
As you complete Captain Brant’s first set of quests in Vernworth, you will complete the quests “The Stolen Throne” and “A Disturbing Encounter” where you will meet the owner of the Rose Chateau Bordelrie. Wilhelmina. (In our experience, you also need to complete “A Veil of Gauzy Clouds” before this quest triggers.)
Talk to her in the brothel and give her some gifts (like court clothes and flowers) and she will take a liking to you. When you visit her the next day, she will not be in her room and a staff member named Rolf will tell you that she is busy. Use the painting in the southwest of her room to spy – just like you did on The Stolen Throne – to start the quest.
As Every Rose progresses, you have the chance to either help Wilhelmina or betray her. For the purposes of Off the Pilfered Path, you should help her by giving her this Murder report.
“Short-sighted ambition”
When you reach Bakbattahl you will find a pharmacy run by a man named Isaac. He will ask for a ripe quince to improve his eyesight so he can read a (definitely not cursed) spell book. The next day he will ask you to find the other volume of the tome – you can buy it at Ibrahim’s Scrap Shop in Checkpoint Rest Town.
When you return to Isaac’s Wares for the second volume, you have a choice. Give him the real spell book or a fake you had Ibrahim make. If you give him the real book, things go badly and Isaac’s Wares closes. If you give him the fake, life will return to (mostly) normal for Isaac and his family.
“Mercy among thieves”
Of course, since Off the Pilfered Path concludes the events of Mercy Among Thieves, you’ll need to complete that one first. On the Battahl side of Checkpoint Rest Town there is a little boy named Toumi. Give him something to eat twice and you can talk to some people across the street. In return, they will point this out to you Lyssandro who asks you to track down the bandit gang called the Coral snakes.
“Mercy Among Thieves” only has one outcome: the leader of the Coral Snakes, Lanzo, betrays a boy named Hugo, whereupon Hugo is arrested.
How to start Off the Pilfered Path in Dragon’s Dogma 2
Go northeast of Bakbattahl to find this Bakbattahl Prison. (There is a back path to the objective from the research lab, but this quest begins at the front door.) As you approach, you will encounter a named guard Exactly Who will lead you in?
Should you offer Hugo advice?
Before you do anything with Hugo – who is in the cell directly in front of you – turn left. A man named Brefft is in the second cell on the left. Talk to him a few times (or just let him talk) to exhaust his dialogue and he will tell you all about Lanzo and Hugo’s past. He will also tell you where you can find the coral snakes now.
Afterwards, talk to Hugo and you’ll have the opportunity to tell him what you learned. If you don’t tell him, he’ll stay in prison. Tell him what you learned, leave the prison, and then rest until the next morning.
Go back to the prison. When you approach Hugo’s cell, a guard will tell you that Hugo killed Brefft and then escaped.
Go directly to Ancient battlefield north of the Rest Town checkpoint – this is the timed part of the quest. If you’re quick and it’s still morning, you can take the oxcart to the checkpoint and walk the rest of the way. If you have a port crystal at the Sphinx’s mountain shrine, you can teleport there and return down.
When you reach the castle at the northern end of the ancient battlefield, Lanzo awaits you. If you get there quickly, you’ll beat Hugo and be able to fight and kill Lanzo yourself. If you’re too slow, Hugo will get there first and he and Lanzo will kill each other.
What job should you offer Hugo in Dragon’s Dogma 2?
If you get there first and kill Lanzo, Hugo will arrive immediately after. Your job is to set him on a better path, and he will ask what a person like him could do. Here you have several options:
- Don’t offer a joband Hugo will wander off and fall back into a life of crime.
- If you have completed Short-Sighted Ambition and Isaac’s family has died, you can offer him a job at Isaac’s goods in the Bakbattahl. If Isaac’s family survives, that wouldn’t be an option.
- Once you complete Every Rose Has Its Thorn and helped Wilhelmina, you can put him to work Myrmecoleon. If you didn’t help her, that won’t be an option either.
For your efforts you will receive one White leather cloth, 4,500 XP, 7,000 goldand Hugos Matted edges Daggers.
